Default Engine ID help Please.

When I bought my 73, I was told that it was not a numbers matching vehicle. I was wondering if someone could tell me what this 350 engine is and what it came from with the numbers that I have found. There is supposed to be a number on the rear of the engine near the bell housing on the driver side...the only number I have been able to find in this general area is a series of raised numbers just above the oil filter which looks like this :
010
020
175
Also on the bottom of the engine on the front driver side just above the oil pan is a serial number plate that is rivited to the engine. some of the ink is worn off but it looks like this:

PRODUCTION
spring******MO
Serial
13727
The 13272 is stamped into the plate...the *'s are where the printed letters were missing.

And, on the front passenger side by the head was the machined area that had the numbers stamped into it...there were a couple of digits that were worn off or the stamp was not that good. it read: c5f179550 V062**Y. again, the * are digits that could not be seen or made out.

I tried mortech at your suggestion and it helped some...I was able to get a better idea of where to look for the casting date and casting number and also found out that the 010 and 020 raised numbers indicate and additional amount of metals were added to the block. What I am looking for is someone with the books that might be able to give me info on the possible usage codes and such for what I have found so far.

Look on the top of the block, drivers side, just behind the head. A raised casting # will be there. Gimmie that # and I can help you more.

The numbers you really need are on the stamp pad, a machined surface on the block in front of the passanger side head. Should be two numbers there, they are stamped not cast. One will look like V0217CHM and the other 1Z3S499999. Post those and we can tell you what you got. By the way, the block casting is at the rear drivers side by the bell housing flange to the left (drivers side) of the distributor.

MasterDave, I found the number I believe you were asking for. It was behind the driver side head and I had to reach down about to my elbow and clean off the surface to read the entire number. The number was a rasied casted number and the surface had a curve to it. Here is the number: 3970010.

Tom73 : And, on the front passenger side by the head was the machined area that had the numbers stamped into it...there were a couple of digits that were worn off or the stamp was not that good. it read: c5f179550 V062**Y. again, the * are digits that could not be seen or made out.

I still need to jack the car up again and search fro the casting # and date. Will this require that I separate the engine from the tranny bell housing or will I be able to locate these 2 numbers with some difficulty without having to unbolt anything?

Here is the number: 3970010.
The '010 casting number is a comon 350 block used from 69 to 80 in numerous Chevy products.
there were a couple of digits that were worn off or the stamp was not that good. it read: c5f179550 V062**Y. again, the * are digits that could not be seen or made out.
The two missing letters is what is really needed. That number will break down as v=flint engine plant, 062*=build date (June 2*), and the **Y=usage code that tells what the engine was. The other C5F179550 is the VIN derivitive. It is not a Vette engine. Format for a Vette would be something like 1Z5S499999 where the last 5 digits match the last 5 of the VIN.[/quote]
I still need to jack the car up again and search fro the casting # and date. Will this require that I separate the engine from the tranny bell housing or will I be able to locate these 2 numbers with some difficulty without having to unbolt anything?
You already have the casting number, the '010 number above. The casting date should be on the other side of the block aproxmitatly opposite where the casting number is. Will be in format of D179 (D=April, 17=day of month, 9=year).

Thanks for all your help. After all of this looking over the engine in different areas, I am beginning to learn more about my vehicle and understanding what it can & can't do.
