Y-Body
Where did they come up with the terms for the body types? Y-body, F-body?? I have yet to make sense of it. At first I thought it had something to do with the letter in the Vin that corresponds to the year but I quickly realized that wasn't true.
Can anybody explain the reasoning behind the terms and the different vehicles that go with each -body style?
Thanks,

Y-body is the platform designation GM gives the car when it is being designed.
Y indicates Corvette
A or G indicates Intermediate Body (Monte Carlo - Grand Prix)
B indicates older Rear wheel drive Full Size ( Bonniville - Caprice )
H indicates newer front wheel drive (Bonniville - Olds 88)
F indicates Camaro - Firebird
There are quite a few more
These are also the letters that are used when looking up a part in the parts books. They also add 2 numbers after the letters to indicate the body style. I am going by memory but I think the number designation was Y87 was a coupe and Y67 was a convertible.

Don't look for any deep meaning to the body letter or nos., they just needed some sort of ID.
The first no. of your VIN is 1 which does have a meaning. Chevy No. 1 division of GM. You could claim it means #1 in everything  & let someone try to prove otherwise.

the first "1" stands for USA.
Then the "G" for GM
then the next "1" is for Chevrolet
"YY" for Corvette
2 is for coupe, 3 for convertible
