Best ways to get more HP out of a 73 350 engine.
My friend has a 1973 vette, with a non-matching 350 engine in it. Although the engine is from 1973, we have determined that it either came out of a truck or a low end camaro. Stock it is probably only 145-165hp. Right now he has flowtech headers on it, and that's about it. What do you think his best bet for bolt on power increases are?
He wants a new carb forsure....
Should he get this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/aw-cg...ndexURL=0&rd=1
or this
Edelbrock carb: http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive/carb_qjet.html
?? Or any other model you guys recommend?
Alos maybe a new manifold, and headers, distributor would do him some good. He wants the car to put out at least 250HP when he's done with it.. is it possible with just bolt-ons while still maintaing the factory appearance (except headers). And good combos you guys have used to achieve significant HP increases?
let me know guys...
Mike.

A "hotter" cam would be your best bet. To properly select a cam it would need to be matched to your buddy's setup. A nice set of good flowing heads would also help out. The heart of the engine is the cam and heads, your engine's power is pretty much determined by how much air it can push in and out of the system.

No problem. A Q-Jet 750 CFM or another 600 CFM carb. is fine. Non egr intake like Performer 2101 rec.
All it really needs is another cam for what you want assuming carb, ig., engine, etc. is in good shape.
Needed for cam - trans. & rear gears.

Might add a K&N air filter as well, sure helped my sb breathe better and I felt a performance increase as well. I will be rebuilding a Holley 650 dp and putting on a performer intake and in all likelyhood headers before spring. Will let you know of the difference from the seat of the pants perspective.

Do you guys think it is just better if he gets a crate engine and puts it in? I mean after replacing the cam, carb, intake, headers etc. he practically has a new engine anyway. What do you guys think, and do you recommend and crates engine or suppliers of them?
Thanks,
Mike.

A crate engine would be the way to go. Especially since it isn't the original engine anyway. Either a ZZ4 or one of the Eldlebrock crate engines would be good. GM has a good no hassle warranty on the ZZ4 engine. That Vette needs atleast 350 hp , 250 hp is a waste of time and money.
