Default 78 oil pan, can I replace with generic?

my oil pan is badly dented and rusted, price from a couple vette vendors was ~$100.
Jegs has a SBC oil pan for $33. Chrome for a little more.
do I need get a Vette pan or will a generic one fit?

You need a Vette one or at least add a windage tray ... Go cheap there and oil circulation can be a problem. Not worth going cheap here... :flag

not sure if this applies to 78 but once owned a 77 which my girlfriend now wife bottomed out and ripped a hole in my pan. we replace it with one from a camaro not sure of year. there is a book that tells you which vette parts are inter changable with other chevy products most vette catalogs have them in there

I'd be wary of the crhome pans. There've been a couple posts about the difficulty getting them to seal! :smash:

I think most of those cheap oil pans are made offshore, and I would be concered about the thickness of the pan flanges. I have read that they are prone to leaking. Summit or Jegs sells a Milodon stock pan for about $80.00 which is probably cheaper than a GM but good quality. I like the suggestion about looking for a Camaro pan if its the same. Could probably find one at a junkyard for cheap. I happen to have a Camaro oil pan but I also have a 1970 Camaro engine in my vette.

Regards,

Jim

I have a generic, chevy 350 oil pan I got at a swap meet new, in the box for $30. Not chrome, it fits fine and when painted it looks great. Get new cork gaskets and do not over torque the bolts and it will not leak.
