3,500 HP or 6,000 HP?
Sears Point will be having two major NHRA drag racing events this year....The Jun events will feature 3,500 HP cars, and the Aug event will feature 6,000 HP cars.....I would like to attend both events, however my job only allows me one vacation period a year.....The Jun event (3,500 HP Cars) has a Hotrod and classic car show on Sunday.....The Aug event (6,000 HP Cars) will not have this extra feature.....I really want to see what 6,000 HP looks and sounds like, however that extra car show during the Jun event kind of makes me want the more bang for the buck deal......Here in Hawaii we only get to see maybe one Funny Car and one Dragster and they don't even approach those HP figures....So this will be a major mind blowing experience for me and the wife....Which one should we attend? :seeya Cappy

go for the Top Fuel, 6000 hp is unforgettable... take your earplugs!!
if possible, take a tour thru the pits and watch them tear down the Top Fuel engines and do a quick startup... just a brief snap of the throttle is like an explosion!>

Quite a vote for 6000 hp. I was going to suggest that if you want to see 10,000+ HP accelerate go to your local international airport.... but never mind! :) MJ

There is almost nothing like hearing a fuel motor fire up for the first time, unforgetable. I used to live less than five minutes from the track in Pomona.

We have a guy locally that runs a rad shop. He bought this running top fuel car from somewhere in the U.S. and shows it at all the car shows. I don't think he has a license to race that fast, but anyway....He was at a charity car show I was in and was starting the engine and blipping the throttle every time a certain amount of money was raised. I think he did it about 5 or 6 times. I kid you not, every time he did that I jumped. It scared the hell out of me every single time even though I knew it was coming! At another show I was able to stand about 6 feet from it during one of his routines. My eyes burnt so dam bad I had to leave and come back. I couldn't understand how the owner was able to stand right in front of the open header with his shirt just a flappin. I guess you get used to nitromethane. I used to make deliverys to his shop all the time and he had empty barrels of VP racing fuels C-4 or whatever the heck it was.

nunus79,
The wife and I got a good laugh out of that one.....We probably will try for both events.....I think I do feel a little feverish and a cough, cough, coming on now that you mention it.....There's a fuel dragster sitting right up the hill, and the guy wants $25,000.00 for it.....Maybe Maurice, you, and I can really have some fun down at the strip.....we don't have to go fast....just make a lot of noise and act like we know what we're doing..... :D :seeya Cappy

Where's Mission Viejos and Lakewood California? Are these places close to where Sears Point? Will it be scorching hot during Jun or Aug?.....What's the best days to watch these events...1st? 2nd? or 3rd? I would attend all three days if I could, however I will have the wife in tow, and she has a very short attention span for Things that make loud noises, The smell of burnt rubber, and The pungent aroma of NITROMETHANE.....Plan (2) calls for a large shopping mall nearby where I can dump her for a day or two,.....Plan (3) is find out if any of her girlfriends live close by, and dump her there,....Plan (4) luck out and have one of her girlfiends call her and say, "We need to talk." :D :jester

Go to the California Nationals. Aug can be hot, been there at 100+, a time you will not forget. This is one of the 18 national events.
Sear Point is 20-30 minutes north of the Golden Gate bridge. (San Fran shopping south of the bridge).
Order tickets as close to the starting line as you can (not to close, as I have not ordered mine yet). If you have only one day, go Sunday for the finals. Otherwise, Sat and Sun make a great blast.
When the TFuel take off from the starting line it feels like they blow the stands back a foot with the exhaust.

trw,
I was told to call and order my tickets now as the grandstand tickets are going rapidly....I'm calling tomorrow....Wow, the tempertures will be 100+
Where's the best place to stay? Napa Valley? Sonoma? or San Francisco? I've been seaching on the WEB for Hotels and Motels in Sonoma and Napa Valley or nearby and I keep getting zero search results. I may have to set something up with a travel agent.

Cappy...you sure you really want to see Top Fuel? WARNING : Watching Top Fuel is addictive! There is no known cure for breaking the habit once started :D I started going to SIR in Seattle (6 hours from home) back in 1988...haven't missed a national event up there since then. Last year I thought about saving some money and wasn't going to attend, my wife of six years was so dissapointed (she never attended a drag race till we were married) that we changed some vacation plans and SHE paid for the motel rooms (her money  ) so we could still go! So you see you just never know...next year your wife maybe leaving YOU at the mall and taking HER girl friends to the starting lines  Enjoy!

TRW - Your right plan for 100 degrees and also cold 50 degree ocean fog. Two or three years in a row was hot. Then we showed up and nearly froze. The booths selling racing jackets and sweats all sold out. Even on the hot years you can't wait for the morning fog to burn off.
I always go for the pit side near the starting line. No booze - Pit side. but if your creative they won't check to see what's really in your coolers 2 litter bottles. Cooler size is limited to 12-18 pack type that can fit in front of you. The pit side is great because of the massive big screen across from you so you get to see the replays and interview. It's also nice to see the exhibits.
Out of all the National events I have been to Las Vegas Is the meet to go to. Seattle sucks and gets rained out and delayed most every year. Kansas, Houston, Denver, Pamona, Sears Point being top of them. :seeya there.
