Value of Vette with different engine?
I'm seriously considering either switching to a ZZ4 or 383 Stroker. My 80 is an L-48 and a dog, so to speak. Anyway, does switching engines deflate or inflate the value of the car? Everything else is stock. Installed new interior this past October!

A non-stock motor is not going to devalue an 80 significantly at this time. 15 years from now, it may. If you want to avoid posibilities down the road, SAVE your original motor (under your work bench).

Typically it is only important to corvettes that had high performance engines (like L-88's for example). If the original engine was replaced in say.. an 80 (which was only available with one engine) and it was equal to or better than the original the value would not suffer. However if someone put a 4.3 V6 in it... well ..... you get the idea... Even Old NCRS cars with corrct replacement engines don't seem to suffer to much value loss. ;)

It's sometimes cheaper to find a car that's had some or all the mods that you'd like already done to it. It's nice to start out with something not so spectacular and mod as you can, but you'll usually end up spending more than what you can get for it later IF you sell.
With that, I couldn't afford to buy the car I'd like, so I'm spending much more than I'll ever be able to get if I were to sell later. It's mine at this time, so I'll have it MY WAY :D !

Depends on the buyer. A hotrodder pays more if there are things done so that he does not have to add those.

You could always drop whatever engine you want into your car, then rebuild/modify/play with/ make a lamp out of/ whatever/ the original. But keep it by all means!!

Keep the original and build what you want to drive. I think most people interested in buying a Vette to drive are much more interested in the condition of the car and the drivetrain than they are the numbers. IMHO. I think a ZZ4 in your car would make it worth more to most buyers.

Re: Value of Vette with different engine? (Kloppy80)
Kloppy80,
If you look at the published price guides for older Vettes you will see that they only consider cars with the original engine. Older Vettes with original engine are much more valuable then a comparable car without the original engine. Once the original engine is gone it can never be replaced so the ones with the original engine go up in price. Vettes with after market engines, transmissions are just old Chevy's. Please, no flames.
But, having said that, I agree with several above. Pull the original engine and store it away for future use and drop in a good crate engine.
You always have to keep in mind that the Vette is YOUR car so you have the right to do with it as you please, subject to local laws. Get it set up the way you want it, drive it, and enjoy it.

Tom:
Thanks to all the advice I have recieved on this issue! At first, I never even thought about keeping my old engine, but what a great idea. Also, during that time, I can always play with it, learning some things I never knew. Great ideas. Thanks!
