What type of oil filter do you use?
I'm not talking about a brand X vs. brand Y shootout.
Many Chevy V-8s call for a Delco PF25. I've read that the larger PF35 provides more pressure (maybe a good thing for older, high-mileage engines) but I don't see it listed as an "authorized" substitute.
I put a PF25 on my '79 last night. It's a pretty good sized filter but not as large as the Valvoline that was on there previously. There's a lot of variables involved other than just physical fit (filter medium, pressure-relief valve, anti-drainback valve and pressure rating).
Anyone have any info that lists acceptable substitute filters?

Neo,
Valvoline makes (refines) oil, they don`t make oil filters. AC Delco makes parts. I use the PF35-L it`s the longer PF-35 with synthetic media. You can (and probably should) use the PF-35. ....redvetracr

Yeah, I know there's probably only a half dozen filter manufacturers on the planet but the filter I removed was a white filter with a "valvoline" label (maybe a quikie lube special). I replaced it with an AC Delco filter.

I use a Mobil-1 Filter.
Someone (I believe it was Joe Lucia) wrote a report a few years ago about Oil Filters after buying about 15 of them and cutting them open. Each of the other major brands were nearly identical except for the Mobil-1 Filter that seemed to have a more intricate fabric filter as opposed to the standard paper filter. The Mobil-1 Filter cost a bit more but I trust Joe Lucia's work.

I used a K&N Oil Filter at my last change, and I've noticed a power increase. From ~220 hp up to juuuuust under 700. Aside from the major power difference, there's not much noticeable difference between it and the PF-35 I usually use(and most mechanics reccommend).

I use a PF35 version made by a company called Hastings. This filter is Big beefy and is made of real steel by an americian company.
I change my oil and filter after every race, and in the fall and in the spring So I use a lot of them.
(I haven't noticed any power increase tho :( )

Never used anything else. Vette has 171,000 truck has 275,000(2nd motor). Every vehicle my dad every drove had a Fram and never had one die with less than 150,000 miles on it.

I have used Fram for as long as I can remember. My first cars didn't have a filter. Well, that's sort of a lie. They did have an oil-bath breather. I've never had to go into an engine due to failure.

Re: What type of oil filter do you use? (Neo Fender)
I read the above referenced oil filter study a while ago, and decided to go with the AC/Delco PF35. Been using AC/Delco filters ever since. My oil has appeared cleaner at oil changes now. I would DEFINATELY not go with Fram. They used to make a good product, but they are now crap. As far as the PF25 vs. PF35 debate...I dunno.
