No top end because of..tranny?
I have no top end speed. My 79 l82 with a 3spd auto runs at about 4k going 80 on the highway. It redlines at 4500 so I obviously try not to go very fast for long :D. I just put the vette in the shop yesterday to get pretty much all of the "need to get" fixed problems out of the way. My next step is to get it going a little faster on the highway. Is it my th350 tranny thats all the trouble or is it my stock gears? What are the cheapest, best, or both combined solutions out there? thanks...-newbie

Not sure of your problem?? The 1979 L-82 and TH350 (3.55:1 rear) will red-line at 126mph. The red-line is 6,000rpm.

Re: No top end because of..tranny? (bryant080)
*I just went and checked my car again and the actual red line bar starts at 4500 and I know that when i drive it floored thats when it shifts through 1st and 2nd.
Well maybe it is just my car, but i would like it to go a little more than 126. I want the best of both worlds though. Eventually i would like to be able to cruise around town and know that I could beat some kid whose dad bought him a 20,000 trans am if I wanted to, but i also want top speed. Gears could solve either one of my problems but not both of them together. Is a different transmission my only other choice?

this is what you want....
http://www.700r4.com/conv.asp?kit=6881corv
this will answer questions http://www.700r4.com/FAQ/FAQ.htm
down the road put in better gears if you need more out-of-the-hole...
and as an extreme measure put a some 4.11 carrier if you need more out of the hole in the long run...

Re: No top end because of..tranny? (bryant080)
many have doen this swap..........and if you really want to wake up your motor.....
a weekend wake up on your vette would be the heads, cam, headers....and
then go at the tranny....
if you check my sig link to my home page you'll see my engine build..
I next want to do this tranny swap...for me it will probably be like $1500
but since you have access to a shop probably more around $1,000 for you...
if you search archives on 700R4 you should find some documentation on it...
here are some good threads on the issue : http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=183630 , http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=155948 , http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=130575
