can my Q-jet be converted to electric choke
WE have a 75 L-48 that is in need of a rebuild. (98k miles and blue oil smoke) The vortec heads and intake that Im leaning towards does not have a provision for a hot air type of choke. Instead of buying a new carb, I would like to convert my old carb to this new style. Is it possible???

The later model Q-jets had the boss on the side of the carb that would allow conversion to an electric choke. I don't know if the 75 has the boss or not.

I have used Q-jets off of early '80's C-10 pickups that have a slick integrated electric choke. It came on both feedback and conventional carbs, but only a few years of the latter. I have one of the choke assemblies in my stash, but I don't know that you can use it on a carb that doesn't have the related linkages and pull-offs, etc. I'll check some of the older trucks in my fleet here at work and see if I can identify the years it was available and take some pictures if you like.

I think 75 and up quadrajets had an integral choke (choke housing is on carb instead of mounted remote on intake). If your carb does have the choke housing on the carb, you should be able to purchase the electric choke element for a 1980 vette carb and use it. We did this to a friends 79 that used the old bi-metal spring in the housing.

I think NAPA sells a kit for an electric choke conversion. I have some info somewhere - I'll see what I can find.
Here's some info - this is to convert from a hot air setup that uses a bimetallic spring:
Echlin Solid State Electronic Automatic Choke Control
PN 2-1603, about $55 at NAPA.
This one was for a Buick Q-jet, but I would guess that
Chevy one might be the same part number.
The kit consists of a replacement choke cover and the control
unit. The control unit is a black potted cube about 1 inch on
a side, with a metal tab sticking out that mounts under a intake
bolt. Wiring is pretty simple, there are two wires from the
control unit to the choke, and the control unit needs BATT power
and a IGN power source.

I bought my conversion kit from Summit or Jeg's. In any case, it took 10 minutes to install, and 30 minutes to wire up and I'm slow. Works great!

I converted the Q-jet on my '75 to an aftermarket electric choke set-up. Very simple, no problems.

Re: can my Q-jet be converted to electric choke (75rat)
Edelbrock sells a conversion from hot air style choke to electric choke. I did this about 1 year ago and it works fine. You can probably do a search and find the part number (or go to Edelbrocks web site).

Re: can my Q-jet be converted to electric choke (Chris A)
Thanks all. Been away for a while. Looks like I'll be able to save approx. $350.00. Just curious though, will it be able to support 390-425 hp?
