Default Removing the Smog Pump

Well it looks like I get to replace my head gaskets in my 81, so "While I'm At It" I would like to remove my smog pump, what things do I need to plug, add, remove or connect together to keep my car from running funny or showing the Check Engine light?

Its been awhile but is it still driveable . start with the belt, drive it see how it performs. Then start plugging vac hoses [not the egr valve] do abit at atime and moniter your performance. then you could always put it back

Not sure how the computer would react to it, but you'd have to take the bracket, belt, cap off the exhaust manifold fittings.
Also, the pipe (diverter valve?) that goes to the back of the air pump, not sure how to deal with that. Someone else may be able to help better.
