Default Fan Clutch

My fan clutch seems to be malfunctioning because it runs constantly. I was wondering if anyone knew if the clutch can be repaired? I'm a poor college student so I'm interested in fixing it instead of paying $85 + shipping for a new one.

Thanks,
Ted

If you check under C3 parts for sale, I'm selling an almost new fan clutch (1,500-2,000 miles) that I purchased from Advance Auto for $60.00. Asking $25.00. Heavy duty for cars with a/c.

Regards,

Jim

Well, it is supposed to run constantly. It just sort of free wheels until it reaches a certian temperature and then locks but it never actually stops . I makes more noise when it is engaged. :jester

Yeah I know what you mean...it seems to be loud when the car is cold also. I noticed that my engine takes ~4 years to warm up now and I just noticed the fan clutch didn't seem to be working right. Maybe my T-stat is stuck open?

Thanks for the replies,
Ted

If the fan clutch isn't slipping it will howl with increasing rpm, sounds like a quad is open. Try spinning the fan with the engine off, it should turn freely with some resistance and should not freewheel or lock up or bind. Hope this helps

The Haynes Manual has a test you can do to check your fan clutch.

Mine went bad a little while ago. When i turned the engine off, the fan just stopped right away. When i tried to tun it, it didnt......it can alos be bad if it just turns freely. I went with a flex fan setup....the pic is below, but the whole setup cost around 60-70 bucks...
Jim73's clutch would be more practical for you.....

P.S. I know what it is like to be a poor college student!! Im lucky i can afford oil anymore...
