Just wondering. Why shorty headers when full length ones will fit fine?

you sure they will fit like the dynomax ones? I have the stock manifolds on with chambered exhaust I don't think they will fit?

No, I saw a set of the Q1000's on a later model and liked them. I was close, but the performance argument, and the price, is steering me towards full length. Just can't decide which ones.

Thanks! I got the hood from Eckler's. On the Headers I have the full-length Dynomax cerma coated headers on my 79. They fit great and were easy to install. As for whether they will bolt up to chambered exhaust I don't know, but would think with a little work the could be done.

My car is loud enough as it is especially the drone at highway speeds :smash:. Long tube headers are a pain in the butt we have to put them on my sons mustang already. But I think shortys would be fine.

Trust me I know normally long tube headers are a pain in the bum! to install, but I swear that the dynomax headers dropped right into place. It was easier installing the headers then it was taking off the old manifolds. Shortys are nice, but they can not hold water to the performance gains of long tube headers. My 2 cents.
BTW what year is the stang? I helped a friend install a set of long tubes on his 89 LX and god that was really pain to do!

Well he has a 91 stang with an AOD they are mac headers that are jet-hot coated. We are putting a full exhaust on it with a lot of other things to make it scream but as of now it's not faster than the vette.

79er,
Do you have an auto or 4-speed? I have an L-82 4-speed and I heard you have to remove the clutch linkage in order to fit the headers (any brand). Is that true?

79 L-82,
I have heard from many people that the Dynomax Ceramic Coated headers are by far the best buy (and good performance) and will fit vettes easily. I plan to get them at some point, just waiting on other projects first.

You should have the stock rams horn style manifolds, if so, shorty headers really won't give you much performance increase. If you're going to spend money on headers, get the Dynomax Ceramic Coated headers, they're only about $210 in Jeg's, Summit, etc. You can get the plain black ones for about $100 but the coated ones are much better as they will last longer and reduce heat.

What other mods have you done to reach the 12.85 time? Surely that's not just with the Accel, exhaust and stock Q-jet. If so, give me some part #'s!! :D

Well I have an auto, but have heard the same rumor. I can not remember any sawing they had to modify the linkage to get them to fit, but I have never really looking into it. I leave this question open to the forum; will headers fit a shark with a 4 speed? If so do you have to modify the linkage to get it to fit?

I know how to make a quadrajet work better than all aftermarket carburators. And it has a turbo 350 with bfgoodrich radial TA's nothing big it just runs like it should. You need ignition timing, carburation, and good exhaust flow with deleted mufflers (mid-americas chambered exhaust is awesome :yesnod:

79vetteL82 you have just shown me that you really do know a thing or you about cars and how to make them run. Welcome to the very small group of Q-jet owners that know when set up right they will run rings around a Holley any day!! :jester

I don't think anyone had to modify the linkage, they just had to remove it and then reinstall it because it actually goes between two of the header primaries.

79 L-82,
We may have to meet at either your place or mine this summer for some carb work if I can't get it straightened by then. I have some relatives up in Naperville so I could always come up to your place on a Saturday and then head over to their house for the night. That is, of course, if you wouldn't mind helping out another vette owner. Not trying to be pushy, hope it doesn't sound that way.

Did you do any of the mods progressively and check times before and after or did you do them all at once? Any idea what it ran before the mods if they were all done at the same time?

I too have heard that, just heard that it's a major pain to get them set up. I bought Doug Roe's book on Rochester Carbs and plan on doing some work to mine a little later.

sharklover: I made two runs with my G-tech pro the first one was 13.23 from a dead stand still. The next one I went 12.85 dead stand still quick shifting it. Even with the ever popular bfgoodrich TA's. The car had all the mods done to it when I saw what it did. Back in my 70's drag racing days I still had a kit to modify a quadra-jet. I had a 67 GTO that ran 11.50's with a quadra-jet. I know in Jegs or summit there should be a kit from holley to make a quadra-jet work right. Mine has a factory 3.73 gear which makes a big difference. When I got the chambered exhaust it made a big improvement! If you need more help I'd be more than happy to help you :chevy

I also have the 3.73 gear. Either that or they're 3.70. I've seen so many sources say 3.73 and others say 3.70 that I don't know which it actually is. I've got the M-21 4-speed. I also have BFG T/A 255/60.

I haven't made any runs since I had the exhaust put on so I don't know what it will do now. I do know the carb needs a little work, I've been thinking of sending it off to Lars but I don't imagine he could do much more than "get it in the ballpark" by not having the carb on the car but who knows, he might be able to get it perfect. When I get to that point, I'll ask more specific questions.

Thanks,
Avery
