Default Painting and respiratory protection

Noticed a lot of vette owners doing their own garage paint jobs. I'm in the same boat, but are wondering what everyone is using to protect their lungs. A cartridge mask doesn't seem adequate for the urethane paints. Any suggestions for supplied air systems in the way of brand/model/where to buy/how much etc. Actually, is there a full face mask that can use scuba air? Cant find much info on this.

I use a survive-air (could be spelled differently) fresh air system. Basically an air pump that sucks outside air and pushes it into your mask. Good part is you breathe perfect air - sometimes perfectly cold depending on the season. Bad part is you have to lug around an extra hose. I also have a problem with the mask fitting. It's not tight enough and it blows air up into my eyes.

I purchased mine from the local PPG store.
As I recall it was about $700.00.
Here's a link to the systems they have (scroll down the page): http://www.autobodystore.com/SASCorp.htm
Looks like they have changed them a little since I bought. I have the blue compressor with a regular (covers mouth and nose) mask.

I used a cartridge type filter and changed the cartridges every time I went to a new paint. (primer, color, clear, etc.) I didn't have a problem with the fumes so much as I did with my eyes. I would strongly suggest that whatever you get it is a full face mask. Also make sure when you are shooting that you have adequate ventilation. An exhaust fan is an absolute must. A supplied air respirator would be the best. I am purchasing one before I paint another vehicle. Of course, that's just one of the many thingss I will do differently before next time. :D

There needs to be a system that is more economical for the hobbyist. I wonder if these systems can be rented......

I searched the world over for a rental place that carried fresh air respirator, to no avail. The cheapest system I found was about $450 and I just couldn't spend that much. I ended up buying a full face canister respirator on e-bay. This is going to have to do for a one time paint job.

Maybe we could setup a paint tool loaner program???

I have a good gun and air filter setup.
