Aluminum intake on 70 454 LS5?
I will be removing my heads for repair this winter. I have a 1970 454 and I was told the intake was aluminum. Is this true? It is painted orange. I was told by a self-proclaimed corvette expert that it is cast. I tend to agree with my brother. (Wassup bro.) Oh..yeah...I'm at work and dont have the casting #'s.
Thanks.

Re: Aluminum intake on 70 454 LS5? (70PurpleLS7)
I have a '70 LS-5. The original intake is cast iron. However, a while back a friend of mine located an aluminum intake (at a swap meet) that looks identical to the original. So I bought it and installed it (saved a few pounds plus it looks good). I don't know what it came off of, but I believe I saw one on a Chevelle 396 motor (possibly the 375hp version).

Katman...that's the kind of intake I'm looking for. If anybody has one for sale, e-mail me at hmpco@aol.com

Defintely Cast Iron on all Corvette 454's. The 68-69 Corvette 427/390hp used a Q-Jet aluminum intake and this is the one you need. The casting numbers are 3919849 or 3947801. These are the only two factory aluminum oval port q-jet intakes that will fit under the stock BB hood. Unless you have a hi-rise hood like the L-88 hood, the 396/375 or any of the other Chevy hi-po aluminum intakes will not fit, and they are Holley square flanged anyway.

Re: Aluminum intake on 70 454 LS5? (70454)
I've got one of the L-36 aluminum intakes on the way to me for my 73 454. There's actually 3 castings of these aluminum quad intakes, a late and early 68 model and a 69. The numbers are 3947801,3919849, or 3937793. Besides these there isn't much else that will fit below a stock hood and mount a quad that is aluminum. If you have one of these castings then it is aluminum and consider yourself lucky since these castings are considered fairly rare. At least that's what it says in my book. There's a good website with all sorts of BBC info. http://www.nastyz28.com/bbcmenu.html

Re: Aluminum intake on 70 454 LS5? (chucks)
If you look on page 95, it says that 1970 intake 3955287 is Aluminum, but on page 96 it says that the same casting number in 71 is Iron. Definitely a mistake there in the Pocket Guide........Iron.

Re: Aluminum intake on 70 454 LS5? (Allan71)
Allan,I may be wrong here but I believe there was an aluminum intake in 1970/71 for the 454. #3963569 is the one that allows you to keep the stock hood and run square port heads,I believe, with a Holley carb. A pretty rare piece but was used on big-block Corvettes that were of the high performance variety (not quadrajets & oval port heads). I was thinking of converting my '69 L-36 to square port heads with a Holley and this is the only intake that would have fit the bill and still fit under the hood. I never did it but know they are out there.

Thanks Allan,I have two B.B. intakes one for 67 and one for a 72.Both are cast iron. I could not understand why they went back to cast iron on the B.B. as the those things weigh a ton. I can see a lot weight saving by going to aluminum intake and heads of course some guys want to keep their cars original as possible and thats ok. Chuck

Here is an easy test that will work 100% of the time... See if a magnet sticks to it.
If not, it's obviously aluminum.

This is where I found my confusion. The guide says aluminum and everybody else says cast. I will be looking for an aluminum intake for my Q-Jet.

Re: Aluminum intake on 70 454 LS5? (70454)
Yes, the LS-6 intake is aluminum; I just sold mine, along with the 074 heads and the Doug Nash 5-speed. Yes, the LS-5 intake is cast iron. I have an old single plane low profile Holley manifold on mine. Probably put an aftermarket quadrajet on it because I can't find an affordable TPI unit for it.

569 casting is the 71 LS6 and is the only square port GM intake that will fit under the hood. You can run a 3/4 inch spacer under the carb with the stock air cleaner. (ask me why 3/4 and not 1 inch) the others are right about the 68 and 69 intakes being aluminum. If you really want the car to run, get a holley 6211 (spreadbore double pump 800) No longer in production but can be had on ebay if you look. The difference is amazing
