Quality filters?
Just wanted to know if K&N air filters were worth the $40 or so.
Also, are pennzoil oil filters any good? Better or worse than AC? The reason I ask is because the auto parts store is having a sale.

You are talking about air filters right? I have a K&N and feel that they are highly over-rated and even more so over-priced. The ability to reuse the filters is nice but save yourself the money and just get a paper air filter. Just my opinion and it's also what I would do if I could do it all over again.

I've used the Penzoil filters in my Tacoma and they work fine. Can't say about the Vette thought, I use AC Delco or Fram for that. I think K & N is just paying for the name though. Just my .02

K&N is worth it considering many of us would practically never need to clean it anyway. It actually becomes more efficient at cleaning after it gets a bit dirty, with no loss of airflow. On a street driven car in a non-dusty condition you could go 50k miles at least before needing a clean. That would be about 5 paper filters worth.

Re: Quality filters? (Buffalo Dude)
My 18 year old step-son spent half of his paycheck on a K & N air filter for his 1991 Plymouth Laser. The reason?? "Well it gives you more horsepower". Yeah, that's what the ad says. I told him to go buy all of the things that claim to increase horsepower (without doing anything to the engine) and he would have a 400 HP Laser!!!
In other words......I feel you're paying for the name and just to be "trendy".

I have used K&N on my ATC's(when I had them). The best point is being able to wash them and then go. I also have one on my Corvette.

Good point JIM, the K&N's do have an added advantage for those who may use in a dirty enviorment like 4-wheelers. Pretty much every baja truck uses K&N. All over the dragstrips too. Hmmm..must be something. I dont believe it adds HP. I do believe it helps your engine to achieve maximum potential, and in many cases without the need for even cleaning at all.

I can't say mine added any horses either. I do like it though because its reusable and it looks better than any paper filter I have seen. Especially on a vehicle with a box filter ($8.00-20.00 each), they pay for themselves real quick.

I agree, for a city, town, etc. driven car, paper is more than fine. Plus you can get them (A/C is what I use) cheap when on sale at the parts stores. Last one I got was about $2.

Re: Quality filters? (Buffalo Dude)
Quite awhile back, there was a thread on oil filters. If I remember correctly,
the best inexpensive oil filters were AC and Purolator. The thread contained personal experiences and some links to oil filter tests. Unfortunately, I was unable to find the thread...

Re: Quality filters? (Buffalo Dude)
It seemed to help me, after my engine rebuilt I had a 10x2" air filter and the motor didn't seem to breath right:nonod:. Swiched to 14x3 paper filter and it ran much better:). Then switched to K&N and it seems to breath even better:D .
Sorry don't have any proof in faster 1/4 mile time, but it felt like a step in the direction for me.
