Shoulder Belt Retractors - Can They Be Repaired??
Not too long ago I reinserted my shoulder belts back through my seatbacks. The previous owner did not do this when he installed new seat covers. I think I know now why he didn't!! The retractors catch and won't allow the belts to pull out. I have to 'coax" them out by pulling and retracting numerous times. Very frustrating!! :cry My passenger side doesn't work at all!!
So, I've decided to try and fix the problem. Before getting started I thought I would see if any of you had repaired your seatbelt retractors before. Any tricks? Thanks in advance!!

Mark...I've done the repair you mention to the seat belt retractors and although it's a fiddly job it's quite achievable. You could do with three hands tho.

Bob,
I want to repair the ratcheting (?) mechanism. Can the retractor be disassembled? Is this what you did? Any chance you can describe what you did?

Mark...From memory mine just locked up one day so I had no other option than to take it apart to see what made it work.....or not as was the case.
The only major hassle I recall was the spring. The ratchet device problem was easily remedied just by rearranging things back to the way they were.
This may not be much help to you Mark, but it wasn't a difficult item to fix...just touchy that's all.

I just cleaned mine up, squirted some rust remover into the mechanism let it soak a couple of days then added some oil and wiped clean. Works so far. ( fingers crossed of course)

Re: Shoulder Belt Retractors - Can They Be Repaired?? (dlw)
Thanks for the replies! I will take them out this coming Saturday. I'll try cleaning them first before attempting to take them apart. I read on another site that the spring is very sharp and can unwind very easily. So I will proceed with caution. I'll post my results!
Thanks again!!

My drivers side seatbelt did not work at all, when I took it apart the retract mechanism was missing. So I took the passenger side apart to see what was supposed to be there. There was a cover that said do not remove, so I removed it and out popped a very tightly coiled spring.(DOH) Now I have 2 seatbelt that don't work. I called snake oil, they have the new springs for about $35 each.
hope my mistake helps you out
