Anybody running aluminum 1/2 shafts here?
I'm looking for ways to lighten the unsprung weight in the rear of my 76. I've already went to a fiberglass spring and aluminum calipers, now I'm wondering about the Guldstrand's aluminum camber links and if anybody here runs aluminum 1/2 shaft's. Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't all C4'a have aluminum 1/2 shafts from GM? I talked to one of the driveshaft companies and they didn't recommend aluminum 1/2 shafts for anything but a stock vette - what ever that means. I have a ZZ4 with a hot cam installed (approx. 400 hp & 400+ ft-lbs of torque). Is this too much for aluminum? Any experiences with these would be appreciated.

Jason,
"On paper" every little bit helps but in the real world you will NOT feel the performance gain of slightly reducing your "unsprung weight" or your "static weight". You must also remember, some lightened parts have a shorter life. ......redvetracr

You'll have more impact with lighter wheels. Changing from Rallys to late C3 alum wheels saves about 8 lbs per wheel.

Also unless I'm mistaken only half of the half shaft can really be considered unsprung. so any gain is halved, although reducing sprung weight is a help as well.

If it was possible to go up in size with 1410 universals then it sounds like a great idea. The only problem I've struck over here is getting yolks made up to accept the larger universals. No such luck tho.
Think of how well they'd look all nice and polished too.

One time a bunch of GM Chevy guys went on a vacation to watch a Corvette test (race). GM had a No racing policy. A half shaft broke & the racers took one from a spectator's Vette in the parking lot. Half shafts got bigger later.

I would say aluminum of today better than metal of previous years, consider the ZR1 and Zo6 use alum halfshafts, they are also 3" vs old 2.5', same for driveshaft old vs new alum and bigger size.
