Lars, Is this as bad as it looks?
I finally got my distributor shaft out of the housing and I found some wear and scoring starting about 1-1/2" from the bottom of the shaft and going about another 1-1/4" up the shaft. The point at which the wear ends actually worn down, it had been in a lath.
When the shaft was in the housing it felt tight, without any noticeable wobble or slop. I know that I can replace the shaft, but I wondering what caused the wear inside the housing? There was a lot of up and down play in the shaft, about .090 by feeler gauge, so I know it needs to be shimmed. Should I just junk this thing and do a switch to HEI? I've already got an electronic tach.
Here's a picture of the shaft.
