370O CFM Cooling Fan and Shroud
I was picking up some A/C parts at the shop where I bought my Vintage Air A/C system and Roger showed me a list of electric fan/shroud combinations. Vintage Air makes several cfm rated ones and he had one listed for right at $300.00. It is rated for engines up to 950HP and pulls 3700 cfm. The shroud was plastic, 19" high and 27" wide, but I'm not sure of the overall depth at the fan motor, though I believe it would fit in a C3. Does anyone know of another supplier that might make a similar unit for less money? I am considering this type of unit for my car.

SPAL and Flex-Lite make a similar product for less, BUT the CFM rating is around 2400-2600. You don't need 3700 cfm in a C3, even some of the guys with big motors use less than 3000 cfm. HOWEVER, if the $300 includes relays, wiring, and everything, than that's cheaper than a SPAL because the wiring, relays etc. are extra.

Be certain that you understand the electrical requirements (amps) and how it will affect your wiring harness, battery, alternator, etc.

KenSny,
I don't know if they come with the relays, I'll will check. I have run single and double units before, inside the existing shroud and did not have real good luck, but they weren't high priced units. I think the 3700 cfm is a bit high, but in this case, I can deal with too much. I plan to run an intercooler in front of my A/C condenser coil next year, so I want make sure I have more than adequate air movement for stop and go traffic in the summers.
flynhi,
I have upgraded my alternator and wiring over the years, so, hopefully, I won't have a problem with amps and wiring. I just want a clean, electric fan/shroud combination that will work. I believe he might have a 2700 cfm unit with shroud for about $200 (relays?). I think my problems with auxiliary fans, in the past, stemmed from mismatching equipment and nothing really worked in harmony.

Try using the 90-96 GM Corvette Dual Fans. We have seen them picked up at swap meets for anywhere between $45-150. If the shroud is in good condition, we buy it, replace both fan motors with new GM motors and install it into the car. It's a popular C-3 conversion at the shop I use.

Thanks, I'll look for some. There is an annual Vette show coming up next month near me and we have 4 large swap meets a year. I should be able to find some deals.

I agree you don't need 3500 cfm. Spal recommends at least 2000 cfm with 60% core surface coverage. We (dewitts) offer the Spal brand and dual 11" is the best value and quality. The fans only is $248 and the complete kit with wiring, relays, fuses, temp switch, and mounting brkts is $344. This puts out 2780 cfm with both running.

I'd go with the Spal units over some no-name unit. Spal are top quality units. I'm planning to go that direction my self, in a couple of months, I'm tired of that nasty old shroud and that horsepower robbing fan.

Another thing to consider is that if you have a/c normally 1 fan is turned on when the a/c is on, so dual fans are normally better w/ a/c.

Ganey and Smokehouse69, thanks for your inputs. Good point on the double fan vs. single.
Tom, The unit looks clean and not too deep. Thanks for the pics. I don't plan to make immediate changes, until I see how my new motor holds up this summer. I expect it to run cool, in which case, I will opt for electric fans and remove the fixed blade and shroud.

Tom, is there a special wiring diagram for only running one fan and then running the second fan only when the a/c is on. or do you just wire both the dual fans the same way following the diagram X2 or did i miss something. BTW when these fans kick on you don't even hear them. I once read a post that said someone was able to hear the fans running when they kicked on must be their bionic hearing!!!

If you want one fan automatic and one fan on with ac, you have too wire one of the fans into the ac clutch line. So when the air is turned on, so is the extra fan. The other fan is wired per the diagram. td
