Misc. Things Troubling Me...
First off I need help from desktop dyno experts. I'm not sure what heads to use for my combination. Should I use "low performance, pocket ported w/ larger valves" as my heads or should I use "canted oval, pocket ported w/ larger valves"? Big block Chevy heads are considered "canted" aren't they?
I got into a fight (not a fist fight) last night with my buddy. I stopped by their garage to show them the parts that I had just picked up from the machine shop. Only my buddy and Tim (55 years old) were there. They showed no real interest in seeing the parts (they didn't even go out to the truck to look at them)...which was ok that didn't bother me. Then my buddy starts with the "wait until I have this 377 built, it's going to suck the doors off that 'Vette when I go flying by you." As usual I didn't argue with him because it would have turned into a "yea-huh, nuh-huh" arguement. Then they both start up with the "you're going to twist that car in half"....I tried to tell them that my frame is the same frame that was used in the big block 'Vettes but it didn't seem to make it through their thick heads. I also tried to tell them that my car is never going to "hook" hard enough to twist the car (running street tires). They kept up with it for the next 10 minutes before I had enough and walked out mid-way through the conversation. I felt like a human punching bag to say the least. I want to show him my tail lights soooo bad, but fear that I won't be able to. That truck is just so darn light, weighing in at 2900lbs.
What do you guys predict my car will be capable of? I consider myself an above average driver when it comes to shifting. I'm hoping I'll at least pull high 12s....
I'm sorry, I just had to vent :mad :mad :mad

With friends like that, you certainly don't need any enemy's! :yesnod:
I wouldn't have the time or patience for your so-called "friends". :yesnod:

I think you'll toast him. But no matter what, you're still driving the 'Vette, and he's driving an unstreetable S10.

Dude......who cares what those morons think!! You will be happy, and that is all that matters!! Seriously Bence, there will always be someone faster, no matter what you do. At least you are driving a sports car with a great history and pedigree, and not some POS crap can truck!!! C'mon, there is no comparison, no matter how fast he is!!!
LET'S FACE IT....THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF PEOPLE IN THIS WORLD.......THOSE WITH VETTES, AND THOSE THAT WISH THEY HAD VETTES!!!
I wish I had a dollar for every bone-headed jealous comment I get about my vette. People are f**ked in the head!

I'm thinking of 1 word that describes your so called "friends", LOSERS !!!!!
Don't let it get you down, after all your the proud owner of a CORVETTE.
When they get Corvettes, tell them to come and see you, until then tell them to SHUT UP, SIT DOWN, and HOLD ON !!!!!

Your driving a sweet, red, 76 vette. He's in a drag truck from Mars.
You win. My goal is to go fast too -- in style though!!!
If he every gets it done, don't race him. That will really get him PO'ed. His drag truck probably won't be on the road long anyway...
Hang tough & realize your friends are jealous.

If you're using DD, get DD2000. If you're using DD2000, enter the flow numbers yourself. I can make a run for you, if you'd like. Do you happen to know the flow numbers on the heads you're doing? Also cam specs/compression/etc.

*edit* Right now I'm staring at your number with open large tube-headers and AFR 357cc heads...
680 hp @ 6500 rpm, 599 lb-ft @ 5500 rpm... I don't know *any* poopiecan 377-truck that can keep up with that.

Pacin' California:
Yea I'm using Desktop Dyno 2000. I have no clue what my flow numbers on my heads are. All I know is that the heads are "206" casting, gasket matched on the intake and exhaust (to 2" headers), 2.19/1.88 valves w/ bowls blended. They were run on a 75 Camaro w/ 454 that ran 10.90s in the 1/4.
Sorry, I really have no other information on the heads. When I plugged my information in using the Merlin Iron Oval Heads I got 529HP w/ open headers, low performance heads w/ pocket porting & large valves got me 559HP, Canted oval, pocket porting & large valves got me 594.

Any idea what kind of horsepower range the Camaro ended up in? I have a feeling those heads should get you in the 600 hp range, especially if they were run on a car that turned 10's(unless the Camaro was a stripper, of course.). Either way, I think you should stop worrying about running twelves and start worrying about running elevens. That sounds like quite a motor. :) Here I am content with dreaming about a 400hp 350...

Bence If you don't pull high 12s with tha tcombo something is wrong. I would expect low 12s with high 11s if everything is setup and you get some traction. Im in the high 12s with my combo on street tires.
You need to get some new friends also. This guy sounds like a real chump.

Pacin' California:
I punched the flow numbers of the AFR 357s in and MAN, those numbers are crazy! With small tube open header exhaust and my setup, makes around 680HP! That sounds like a future upgrade to me. Right now I just want to get this thing built (which I am VERY close to doing) and get it on the road to enjoy....the heads can always be bolted on later.
Gordon:
You have a 4 speed right? How do you normally launch your car off the line. I'm planning on babying the big block of the line so that my rear end will last as long as possible.
Thanks for all the support guys!

High 12's Bence? Yeah, if you start in third gear! Your mph is going to be a real good indication of the horsepower you have. Compare that with your S-10 buddy's mph. If yours is higher than his you should be able to shut him down with that argument alone. I love it....they way you guys argue. Reminds me of those Pro Street guys, Tony Christian and the other guy. They're always at each others necks. Good to see that you can deal with it though. Some guys take blows on their cars and engines as personal attacks. And in a way I agree because a car is pretty much an extension of one's personality. But it seems as if you know that your opinion is the only one that matters. And any compliments after that are icing on the cake. Keep up the good work Bence!

Bence, the Merlin ovals are as close as you're going to get to your custom heads without flowing them. Don't bother with the built-in "canted/rect" stuff in DD2000, they're out in left field. They list them as "rect", "oval", etc., then they stuff 2.02 valves into the setup and flow them at 25" pressure drop instead of the semi-standard 28". Oval small block heads? WTF? :mad
What rear gears did you wind up with? Do you know your trans first gear ratio? Hopefully, your effective first gear ratio (rear ratio x first gear ratio) is around 10:1 or better for a good launch.
I wish just having a big block was enough, but it isn't. Gordon and Mike69 whipped my butt last year at Etown with their 350's :) It's all about the package!

I beleive Bence is going to use 3.70 gears. 3.70x 2.80(t10 1st?)=10.36. I just worked mine out: 14.93!
2.8 in the t10, huh? Much better than either the M20 or M21. I have the M21 right now with a 3:55 gear, and it's awful

You worry too much. There's always gonna be someone faster than you (not saying your buddy will be). Do your car the way YOU want to do it and enjoy it.

Re: Misc. Things Troubling Me... (Flareside)
4.88x3.06(700-R4). Used to rev a liberal 2400 at 60mph with 4.11's. The M-21 may not be geared real low for off the line but it's a close ratio transmisson, something my 700-r4 isn't.

Joe:
This is the part where my setup is lacking. I really want to keep the 3.36, I've found they are an excellent all around gear. To be honest the 3.70 were kind of bothersome (3000RPMs @ 60mph). I'm not quite sure of my gear ratios but I'm pretty sure my 1st gear is in the 2.5-2.6:1 range.
