How should I install my cam?
I've finally recieved enough of my parts from Jegs and Summit, to start reassembly of my motor. I'm going back with a Comp Cam XE262, I know that it has 4 degrees advance ground into it, should I install it straight up, or advance it another couple degrees?
Since I am running an automatic with 3.08 rearend, this cam is probably about as radical as I can stand, so I'm interested in getting as much low end torque as I can.
Eventually I'll get my 200-4r built and installed with a decent torque converter and 3.70 gears, but until then, I'd like to be able and feel a little performance.

Actually with a degree wheel and the spec card, but if you don't have the motor out of the car this is kinda tough. If you are just trading bumpsticks, straight up should be fine esp with an earlier high compression small block. Straight up installation is what the cam was ground for so advancing or retarding it without a baseline to go by leaves too much room for error. :chevy

Re: How should I install my cam? (Smokehouse69)
I Desk Top Dyno'd this:
XE262, Vortec Heads, Dual Plane, Qjet, small tube headers w/perf muffs, & 30 over
straight up gave 386@2000, 397@3500 rpm torque. 147@2000, 335@5000 rpm horses
4 degrees advance gave 387@2000, 398@3500 torque. 147@2000, 322@3500 horses
The advance is the only thing I changed. To me, anything over 300@2000 is pretty good. If this DTD stuff is accurate & I'm inputting right, you're making 386, WOW!!
Hope this helps!

Re: How should I install my cam? (Ganey)
I am installing Vortec heads, a little porting and the exhaust valves unshrouded a bit. Z-28 springs, 3/8 studs and guideplates. Edelbrock Performer Vortec, Holley 650 DP mechanical secondaries (for now.) I have flat topped pistons with valve reliefs, .030 over, so I figure I'll be right at 10.5 to one, which is a little higher than I want with cast iron heads. I have polished the chambers on the heads when I did my unshrouding, so I hope with a little luck I won't get too much pinging.
Ganey, I have a 200-4r that I picked up from a wrecking yard a few months back. Supposedly rebuilt (in Mexico, I'm sure) I don't trust it, I'm going to tear it down myself and put the Buick GN parts in it myself (one of these days!)
Right now I only get about 6 or 8 hours a week to work on my car, so it might be a while, I have to finish what I have going on first. I have a 3.70 ring and pinion that I'm going to stick in the pumpkin one of these days too.
