Default Just got my GM Vintage Vehicle Package! Let's see how much my '71 has changed!

Hi all!

For those who don't know, GM's Vintage Vehicle service allows people to find out just about everything they can about a GM vehicle with just the VIN number given. Obviously, not all years were well documented, but it's still great if you want to know the authenticity of a GM vehicle or are just curious what your car had when it left the lot. Here's what our package said about our 1971 Corvette Coupe:

Vehicle: 1971 Chevrolet Corvette
TRIM: 417 Saddle Vinyl
PAINT: 983 Brands Hatch Green (you can just check the door jam for these)
PRODUCTION PLANT: ST. Louis , MO
SHIPPING DATE: January 30, 1971
MODEL NUMBER: 19437 - 2dr sport coupe
ENGINE: 454 CID 365 HP V8
DEALER: G.M. of Canada Ltd.- Diplomatic Sales, Oshawa Ontario
NUMBER of 2dr coupes imported for Canada: 823

Options

W84 Additional Fuel for Delivery
A31 Window Electric Control
C60 Ait conditioning manual control
GV3 Differential Carrier - 3.08 RATIO
G81 Diff Carrier - Positraction
J50 Vacuum Power brakes
LS5 Engine 454 CID - 4BBL Carb Hi Perf - V8
N37 Steering wheel - tile and telescopic
N40 Hydraulic steering
PU9 F70-15-4 PR Tire - NYLON - B/Wall - white lettering
U69 Radio AM/FM Push button
U79 Radio stereo AM/FM
ZK8 Tire pressures sticker
ZW4 Base 4-speed transmission
Z49 Mandatory canadian base equip modifications

Our '71 seemed to be a very well equipped car when it left the lot! What was the base 4-speed transmission for '71 vettes though? I thought it was an M20...I can't seem to find any info about that one option ZW4. Anyway, here's what the vette is today:
It's black with a black interior, has a NOM Corvette 454 that's pushing about 600hp. It has an M22 transmission, 3.55:1 gear ratio, power steering/brakes but the A/C isn't installed yet. It's still got the heart of a Corvette! Anyway, I just thought I'd pass the info along to those who are debating whether or not to pay the $45 CDN and use the GM service. I think it's pretty cool learning what your car was when it was purchased back then (unless of course you already have a matching numbers car :D ). Oh yeah, we also got business cards for Corvette specialists in Ontario, some flyers, insurance brochures etc. Overall, a neat little package. It's free for our southern neighbors, so if your car was sold in the U.S. then definitely do it!!

Mike

Hi,

Here's the link to GM Canada's service:
http://www.gmcanada.com/english/main...arts_vint.html

Here's the number:
1-888-467-6853, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. EASTERN Time. (Outside Canada 1-905-644-3387 or 1-905-644-4060).

I noticed the dealer that sold my vette was G.M. Canada themselves...it says "diplomatic sales"...am I digging too deep or could my vette have been made for someone specific and not for a dealer. Or was there an Oshawa dealer called Diplomatic sales? I searched on GM Canada's website and there's only 1 Chevy Oshawa dealer. Any info on this is appreciated!

Oh yeah, the links above are for Canadian sold vettes only! Thanks Chuck for pointing that out for me!

Mike

The Base Transmission (Wide Ratio 4-speed) was RPO ZW4 from 1970 through at least 72. We'll need a later tank sticker to see what the RPO was for the WR 4-spd after 72, and when the RPO officially changed to M20. It was referred to by both RPOs, but the M20 tank stickers I have seen call it RPO ZW4 Standard Transmission. I also don't know what the Base 3-spd manual would have been coded in 68 and 69.
