You and me both!
I have friends that attend the Barrett-Jackson auction every year... They always seem to have a great time.
The fact that it's held in Arizona in early January is an incentive for us northeners too! :)

I love the auction...I have watched every hour of it(on TV) for the last 3 years...and 3 years ago as when we got Speedvision on TV.
This year I'll probably miss an hour or two, but Im watching it right now.

They ought to get some commentators that know American cars. The guy with the British accent said that the engine in the Plymouth Savoy was a max wedge because of the way the cross ram manifold was "wedged" into the engine compartment. :U

WOW!!! Not what I expected at all! I thought with the bad economy we would see cars go for cheap. Instead it looks like the mad money has come out of the stock market and is chasing cars. Yenko Shmenko! Its a friggin Camaro!!! $110k???? The bidding pattern wreaked of hysteria... 98...... 99...... it slows down.... then some bongo goes $105k!!!!

Believe it or not, $100,000+ is the going rate for a first rate '69 Yenko Camaro... Has been for a couple years now. I'm told that the car at the Barrett-Jackson event isn't all that great either... Pretty to look at, but needs some detail work.

Hi,
I've been watching the auction for a few hours also! I didn't see any C3's yet...means no one wants to part with theirs :D . I can't believe that Nascar went for only $31000!! If I could afford to have a car collection I would have jumped on it! That replica of a Porsche sold for a more...a freakin replica! Sure the replica is drivable and street legal, but did you hear the sound of that Nascar? I'd enjoy revving that engine more than driving a fake car.

I dont think the replica Speedster sold!! The seller wanted more than the $33k high bid!!
Stan, sometimes I am guilty of reacting to the prices of these cars based on my personal "opinion" or emotions without having firsthand knowledge of the market or the particular car. Last year I was shocked at the high price paid for a 68 435 hp coupe. Then I learned how rare a true L89 actually was..... but then again, 1 yr later it is still sitting on the Proteam lot!!
As for the Yenko, (I did hear Reggie say he was offered $120k for his NOVA!!!!) the commentators asked, but did not answer the question; apparently a "YENKO" is worth more than a "COPO". I guess Barry Manilow should buy one of those. Then he could sing a song about his COPO CAMARO!! :). Oh well, a fun night! MJ

Mark, I believe all Yenkos are COPOs, but that not all COPOs are Yenkos. ;) Yenko started with a COPO car, then modified it. I could be wrong, but that's what I remember.

Check the Barrett-Jackson web site and there are only a handful of C3's and only 3 of those are bumper cars, 68 and 69 - no 70-72's at all. You'd think you would at least see an LT-1 in the mix. Probably getting a better deal after commission at other auctions.

For 1969, that's it exactly. The Yenko Camaros were actually double COPOs - they were ordered with COPO 9561 listed as the "high performance unit" (the L-72, cowl hood, special 4.10 rear axle) as well as COPO 9737 which was the "sportscar conversion" (larger front sway bar, 15" wheels/tires, 140 mph speedometer). The story was that this was originally intended to be a "Yenko only" order, but the word got out and orders for COPO 9561 and 9561/9737 cars started showing up all over the country.
As you noted, the only real difference between a regular 9561/9737 car and a Yenko 9561/9737 car were the stripes (although Don Yenko offered a bunch of modifications that could be done to the car on site).
The 1969 Yenko Chevelles were also factory equipped with the L-72 under a COPO order (and like the Camaros, other dealerships ordered them) and the 1970 Yenko Deuce Novas were delivered with a factory installed LT-1. All the rest of the Yenko cars in the late 1960s (1967-68 Camaro and 1969 Novas) were transplants - the 427s were installed at the dealership, not Chevrolet.
I picked up COPO 9561/9737 car about a year ago and have been getting quite and education from a good buddy of mine who restores these cars as a profession. He has owned two fantastic 1969 Yenko Camaro as well. Mine is the one in the middle (there is a "regular" COPO 9561 car burried under parts to the far left). The Yenko on the right belongs to my buddy and is a 7,200 mile original paint/interior/engine car.
MJ
I'm just as shocked as you are. Many of the really desirable musclecars are selling for as much if not more than some of the better Corvettes. for example, a really nice 1969 Z-28 goes for about the same money as a 1968-69 L-71 coupe... Go figure. The Corvette is far and away the better performing car, but people are still willing to pay top dollar for a set of stripes and a few emblems... Plus the fact that Chevrolet built 20,000 of them in 1969. I like Z-28s, but worth as much as a 435 hp coupe?
Still, it seems that the market is there...
One of the reasons that the Yenko cars tend to sell for a high price is that all the serial numbers are known which tends to eliminate counterfeit cars. Still, your observation is right on the money in my opinion... Some of these cars are bringing serious money.

I don't think performance has much to do with the selling price. The rarity of the car and condition carry the day and hold that price up.
