Glass codes on ttops, need someones expert advise....
Recently asked to decode the glass codes on 2 friends vettes...took out my handy restoration guide and there were two codes I could not figure out and also 1 said Float instead of Flolite. If anyone could tell me what the following codes show for month & date I would appreciate it (and also tell me how you figured it out or where you got the info)...the first one is TC3 and the second one is NN7.....also anyone know what Float is instead of Flolite? Both tops are blue M1131's Laminated.....these are also both passenger sides if that makes a difference......thanks

Float instead of Flolite, sounds like something aftermarket to me. I couldn't seem to find anything with any info on that.

The glass I'm pretty sure should be FLO-LITE. The blue laminated tops were used on St Louis built cars only, and the later Bowling Green tops were solid tempered and Gray shaded, except for the 82 Collector which was Bronze. The original glass was made by Libby Owens Ford (LOF) and will be coded for glass type AS3. As far as I know, the same two character dating system was used, so I don't know what the codes TC3 and NN7 mean.

Just guessing here but FLOAT is a process used to make glass. BAsically they "flot" the glass on a tank of molten tin to help get it very flat. (at least they used to...I think they've replaced tin with another metal) Glass made this way is called float glass. Don't know if this helps at all...

Here is the info from Richard Prince's "Corvette Restoration Guide/1968-1982." I have never been able to interpret these codes. Perhaps someone can help.
Glass Date Codes
All 1968-1982 Corvette glass was manufactured by Libby Owens Ford (LOF). The date code contains a letter for the month and a second letter for the year.
LOF Month/ Code

Paul, I don't understand his terminology for figuring the year. The codes he gave are correct for the months, and here are the year codes. Basically, the date code is two characters, first the month and then the year. Since the letters for the years are reused every 14 years, you will sometimes have to guess as to whether the glass could be a later replacement.
C................1963.....1976
G................1964.....1977
J.................1965.....1978
A................1966.....1979
Z................1967.....1980
X................1968.....1981
V................1969.....1982
T................1970.....1983
N................1971.....1984
Y................1972.....1985
U................1973.....1986
L................1974.....1987
I.................1975.....1988
So Paul, the glass date code on your glass could possibly be JA, and this would decode as May of 79. The glass designation is AS1 for windshields, AS2 for the side and back glass, and AS3 for glass tops, and it is not unusual to have different date codes on the different peices of glass.

Re: Glass codes on ttops, need someones expert advise.... (Allan71)
Ok guys...alot of info here...so the codes in question are TC3 & NN7 so the TC3 is August 76 (didn't know glass tops were made in 76 and still don't know what the 3 is) and the NN7 is Jan of 84...(which I guess could be possible if the car replaced the ttop and they made it in 84...but still don't know what the 7 is). One of you did have a pretty good explanation for Float instead of Flolite...but no one has actually found it in any restoration guides...thankyou for all your responses...the debate continues.......

TC3 also could be August 89...makes more sense..now i just have to find out if GM made these tops (or when they were discontinued) but still don't know what the numbers mean after the letters or the difference between Float & Flolite....ughhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!
