Default Want to get side pipes....need advice

I'm wanting to change my stock configuration exhaust on my 79 to side pipes. Looking for advice on what all I need to get, where to order from and so on.

Thanks,
John

The ones on my car are the original style with fibreglass covers. They are stainless steel and the kit came with everything for the complete install. I bought mine from Ecklers because they gave me the best deal at the time. They fit perfect and they sound puruuurfect :D

My Uncle also has a '79, and his wife bought him the sidepipe kit from one of the vendors after seeing Binnie's. New Years weekend we installed it, and it was a breeze!!! Sounds great, and I think it did increase his throttle response a little bit. We eliminated the cats and the mufflers...he now has chambered exhaust (stainless steele). Hooked right up to the factory manifolds, and one bold on the frame in front the back tires. We painted the fiberglass covers semi-gloss black. His car is bark blue with tinted windows, and black trim. The black fiberglass covers contrast nicely against the blue.

I also want to get side pipes for my 77, but I am looking for ones with just the black finish, not original. Any ideas on where to get these from??

Jet Hot has the Hooker side pipes you are talking about, coated in either silver or black.

Do you know the price of them and does it come with the headers?

It is the entire thing...with headers...Jet Hot Coated.
I don't know the price, but you can go to their website, and request the price.

That's for the info, I'm in the process right now. They want $250 for just the side pipes and Summit want $210 for them, but the ones from Summint have not been coated. I am assuming it's woth the 50 bucks for the coating.

Eric70. Just for curiosity, has anybody done any kind of testing on coated headers to see if it drops the temp under the hood that much??? For the high cost of the coating it should be alot !! JCL   :chevy

All the reviews I have read in different magazines say there is a drop in temp.
My headers are not coated, as I was on a budget when I put mine on.

Could anyone give me some pricing on the kits from diffrent vendors? Or recommendations? I tried Jet-Hot's web site with no luck. I tried Eckler's and couldn't find a listing for the anything past 74. I checked Summit's web site and found some, but the details are a little sketchy, can't tell if they are coated or not.

Thanks,
John

I'd check your emissions laws before doing anything. If you plan on moving anywhere in the future check there too. You could be up the creek without a paddle if you remove the cats and the mufflers on a '79.

Steve,
Thanks for the advice. Here in Alaska you can get seasonal tags for vehicles that won't pass an emissions test. You're just not allowed to drive your car during the winter months (Oct thru Apr). I can live with that (somewhat) since there is snow on the ground and I have a "winter beater" to get around in during this time.

Heh, I can imagine that a Vette wouldn't be much of a winter driver in Alaska

I bought my Hooker Super comp. headers and Side pipes through Jet hot coating. They get them from hooker and shipped to them or you. The total cost was about $1,060. I will look for the invoice and post all the prices but I think I have already packed them up. we are moving at the moment. I purchased the sidepipe headers, sidepipes, mounting hardware and inserts and had them all Sterlin coated inside out. They will send the headers to see so you can test fitting first if you like or file down any seems.

Thanks for the site Nomad----I emailed them the other day for a price quote. Here's the reply I got:

Len,

Yes, we do have Pre-coated sidepipe systems for Corvettes. As you would expect they are coated inside & out with our Sterling finish, and carry a lifetime warranty. This set comes with headers, sidetubes & mufflers - your choice of reverse flow or glasspack style.

Price is $1175 for a small block set(big block $1225), and that includes bolts, gaskets and shipping within the 48 states via FedEx ground.

This is NOT what you would buy from Summit, Jegs, etc. Hedman & Flowtech don’t coat the insides of the pipes. Hooker’s internal coating is merely a line of sight spray down the first few inches of the primary tubes. Which is why their warranty is only a year.

Our coating is expected to lower under-hood temperatures by 40 degrees, keeps the pipes 25% cooler and get you 1-3% extra horsepower. Of course, it's highly rust resistant as well - 140x better than paint. Because of that we expect it to increase part life be 10x or more.

If you have any other questions, feel free to drop me line.

Thanks

Todd Beiswenger

That price includes shipping too. Sounds like a better deal to just get the headers from Jet-Hot??
