Whats the real difference between a Saginaw and Muncie(M-20 or M-21) tranny??
My vette has a Saginaw tranny. I don't know what year its from. I'm not having any problems with it but just curious about how much it varies from the Muncie line.

From my notes:
The '78-'79 L48 manual was a Saginaw with 2.85, 2.02, 1.35, and 1.00 ratios. It has a cast iron case and the reverse light switch screws into the case.

Other than the gear ratios, the main difference is in the quality of internal parts. The Muncies have stronger internals & therefore last longer & can take more abuse. If your trans is working well I wouldn't worry about it. If it breaks, you may consider swapping a Muncie to replace it.

I know in the tranny business and he thinks very little of the Saginaws. He said parts are hard to get and they're not made very well.I don't think he even bothers trying to restore them anymore? Maybe that's why most of the late c3 were auto's?
I know another guy who used to put them in his muscle car and blow them up very quickly before a big block. He used them because they were cheap-$100 and there are/were? a lot of them around. These are just 2 experiences I know of people using/discussing them.Your 73 should have a Munice in it, but they run around $700 for a good used one.
As said if yours isn't giving you any problems then drive it , just don't beat on it too much
