Default Will a Test Pipe Help?

I installed a test pipe on my '81. The car has a 4-speed manual transmission, 35k original miles and, with the exception of a K&N air filter, is completely stock. The test pipe did not seem to make one bit of difference. The exhaust note was the same and there was absoultely no difference in performance. Is there any benefit to using the test pipe? Do I need to use the pipe in combination with high performance mufflers to achieve a HP gain? Should I remove the test pipe and install a high flow catalytic converter? Thanks for your help.

Gotta assume that your converter was in good shape then, as I noticed a difference in my '76 when I pulled it out....but I really noticed a diff. when I went to true dual exhausts with no other mods at all...a very nice diff for sure. My .02 :flag :seeya
