Since I'm by no means even close to being an expert, what do you all think of this package.

Holley 1850 600 cfm (factory rebuild) 170.00
Edelbrock Performer 109.00
Comp Cams XE256 w/ lifters 159.99

I'm thinking of replacing the rocker arms too. Should I go with stock or roller with the XE256 Cam?

Were it me, I would use roller tip rockers.
Your combination sounds like it will be a nice street machine.

What cam is in there now, it's been rebuilt probably aftermarket cam you might
not want to change it. Other two choices seem to be the normal first improvements. :D

Go with the roller tipped rockers also my preference for cams is ENGLE they have about 4 different grinds for small blocks (depending on your setup). they have a really great lopey sound while idling.

The engine was rebuilt from a 1970 GM pickup truck. The guy I bought it from said it has a 350 HP cam and 350 HP heads. Not really sure what is in there.

I am going with the carb and intake first and see how it goes. If I like the performance, I will stay with it for a while until I get more $$. All together it will cost $440. If I go with roller rockers it will add another $150.

Right know it has a Edelbrock intake. Not sure what kind. Doesn't say. I know it is at least a 1977 intake. That is when the engine was rebuilt last.

If the intake says Performer on the front then you can scratch that off your list too, get the 750 Holley rebuilt and you now don't have to buy anything :D

has anybody else mentioned new valve springs with that cam? Or did I miss something? :D . And arent roller grinds different from hydraulic grinds or did I really miss something? Aren't we here to help this guy?

you are right, new compatable valve springs are always a good idea with the installation of a new camshaft. But note, that the talk was about roller tip rocker arms, NOT a roller camshaft, many forum members like Comp Cams 1.52 roller tip rocker arms for small block street usage.

I used the Crane Blazer Aluminum Rockers on my upper rebuild....as in my sig on the left you can see them installed.

I don't think you can use the stock valve covers with full roller rockers. I don't think its an issue with roller tip rockers though. Just something to keep in mind. Good choice for the cam. I have an XE268H in my '79. It's a little weak in the vacuum department, but not bad. If I had it to do again, I'd probably go with the XE262H, but I'm happy with my setup. Good luck.

BTW-- If you want any help putting that stuff on one weekend, let me know. I'm in Cookeville, so the drive isn't too far.


One more thing that I forgot about... I prefer the Holley dual-plane Street Dominator aluminum intake. Me and a friend of mine both did an intake swap on the same day. He used the Edelbrock, and I used the Holley. I noticed more of a performance increase than he did. Just my $0.02. :D
