Re: stock tire size (78pace)
I can't find anything that says the tires on the pace car were the wider ones, but all models had the option of 225/70 or 255/60. If the car came with the 255/60 option then the inner lip of the front fender well should be trimmed slightly (this was done at the factory). Sorry I don't have any pics to show you what it should look like. Is the door sticker still on the driver's side door? If so, that will tell you what tire size was on the car originally. If it had 225/70 from the factory then you have a few options:
1. Stay with the 225/70
2. Move up to the 255/60 front and rear and trim the fenders, just slightly
3. Put 255/60 rear and 245/60 front
4. Put 245/60 front and rear to have the same size tire for rotational purposes and still get the wider tires without having to trim the front fenders.
I have option 3 on my 79 since it came with 225/70 originally. You can always put the original size on later, you just can't replace the fender material very easily if you remove it.

Pete,
Where did you find the info? I didn't see it in the black book. Am I blind or was it somewhere else?

Re: stock tire size (78pace)
I thought all Stingrays came with Firestone tires?!?! Stock was a 225/70-15 black sidewall, and there was an optional GR70 (also 225/70-15) with raised white lettering; both from firestone. My fuel tank sticker lists my tires as being the optional GR70, and I actually found a GR70 as my spare tire. The 78 may have something different, but I don't think Eagle GT's were even manufactured in 78.

Rock-nRoll;
You are right about the Eagles. My mistake. They were called Goodyear GT Radials then. Goodyear didn't start calling them Eagle for a few years after that.

Re: stock tire size (Rockn-Roll)
Beginning with 1978 production, the Corvette has only worn Goodyear tires, and that is still true today. The Pace Car came standard with the RWOL 255/60-15 tires, that were optional on the base model. They were raised white outline letters and read "Goodyear" and "GT Radial" on the sidewall. The GT Radial was the 60 series tire used until early 1980, when the "Eagle GT" began to be used, and this continued through 1982. When the 70 series RWL tires were ordered, they read "Goodyear" and "Polysteel Radial" from 1978 through 1982, and these were solid white letters, not the outline type.
