Disassembled 68 vette.... should I buy it??
Ok I know that buying a disassembled car is a big risk because you don't know whats missing or is there for that matter. Also becuase if the guy did a crappy job of labelling parts it will take me about 320 years to re-assemble it. But in all honesty if you could buy a 1968 327-350hp with a Muncie M22 4-speed manual transmission and rare telescopic steering PW, PB, AC would you? The frame has already been blasted, dipped and painted, and the engine and tranny were professionally rebuilt as well. All this for $2800US but I have to arrange for transportation.
Thanks guys,
Michael.

Absolutely I would. For that price, if nothing else you could part it out and make a fortune. Assuming of course you didnt want to finish it.

I'd certainly buy it, in fact if you decide not to please pass on the info, I'll go pick it up. As the other guy mentioned I think it is worth the price in parts especially if the frame is good.
good luck

You could sell just the AC for a Grand. If you want a project, this sounds like a great one for a fair price. Caution: there are a lot of '68 only parts that are hard to find. So take it on only if you want a '68, else pass it on to some other CF'er or flip it for parts if you are so inclined.

If you know that the frame is in good shape it doesn't sound like a bad deal. Are you sure the transmission is a M22?

I would check and double check all the casting numbers, part numbers, and VIN stamps. I already see one thing that doesn't add up, the M22 tranny. No doubt all 80 M22's sold in '68 were installed in L88 cars.

Then I would guess that either he has an L88 '68, which would already be worth more than $2800, or he could sell the tranny to someone with an L88 68 if the #'s on the tranny are right. Or he could just part it out and still make a fortune. It sounds like a good deal to me no matter how you look at it.

I'd buy it. I have a 68 coupe with the same engine and options (except the transmission) and I think for that kind of money you can't go wrong.
You can sell the parts for much more than the purchase price.

I think you missed my point. Obviously it is a good deal even if all the parts don’t match, but it would be nice to know if he is buying a truck motor or a Corvette motor. He was told the motor was a 327/350 and the tranny is a M22. Now we know the advertised tranny isn't correct for the car (I'd bet my house it isn't an L88), who's to say the motor is as stated?

I bought a 77 out of a red clay field in south Mississippi for $1700.00 4 years ago as a project for my son & I, son lost interest so now it's the wife and I. She's happy as I am home...turning out to be a nice daily driver (not original/never will be/have NO interest in) just a fun hobby car...It's what you make it... :chevy

Post the numbers off of the tranny, we'll be able to tell you if it's an M22 or not for sure. Typically if the build code ends with:
A: M20
B: M21
C: M22
You'll be able to tell what it is.
Also, here's a great page for identifying muncie's

probably an M21. Like everyone else said, sounds like a good deal, probably worth the price in parts alone. Would be nice if you could make a car out of it. N36 telescopic steering isnt all that rare ( 6,477 in 68) but it's a nice option: I have it! :) MJ

Would I buy it???? OF COURSE I WOULD!!! I bought my 68' vert in boxes and brought in home in a couple of pickup loads for $4500. I wouldn't hesitate for a minute. Of course, go through the parts carefully and make sure they are there, that's the only thing I would do first.

Man, I'd take it in a heart-beat for that price! (As long as 80 - 90% of the major parts are there) I, like Dalannex, would want to inspect things first. As always, it's buyer beware, some people out there would insert some '69 Fiat parts or something to make you think it was complete. My vette too, came to me in boxes. Actually, it was kinda fun rumaging thru everything to see what was missing.

Here's some photos of the car that were sent to me from the owner. He says that the engine and tranny ARE correct, I will be getting the numbers soon hopefully to verify his claims. In his last e-mail this is what he sent me:
This is a frame-off restoration project. The car is completely dis-assembled, with many parts sandblasted, primed and repainted. Many new parts including both trailing arms (with SS emergency brakes and hardware), front and rear suspension rebuild kits. Includes 327 CI, 350 HP small-block V8 and Muncie M22 4-speed manual transmission. Other goodies: rare telescopic steering wheel, PW, PB, AC, mako-shark style aftermarket headlight buckets and lights. Also, includes 3 additional Corvette doors which could be sold/traded for other parts. Front fenders, hood, grill and original headlights are missing and will need to be purchased to complete the project.
Here are the pics he sent me as well:
Tell me what you think. Also the price has increased slightly to $3100, becuase he has another offer for $3000. Hope I don't get into a bidding waR! If this doesn't work out for me I will be more than glad to offer the sellers info to someone else!
Michael.

Looks like its been on fire.
And with the price increase I'd back off and let the other guy have it.
There is no use in buying it with intentions of parting it out just to break even.
