Intake/Carb combo??
I have a 350 from a 1970 Chevy Pickup Truck in my 1974 roadster. The guy I bought the car from said it has flat top pistons, 350 HP heads, 350 HP cam. It also has a Holley 750 Double Pump on it. I am looking at replacing the intake manifold and carb. I am thinking of going with a Holley 600 or 650. I'd also like to put a K&N air filter assembly on it. I want to keep the same hood on it so I can't get anything too tall. What combination would you guys recommend?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Intake/Carb combo?? (scottw)
I have an Edelbrock combo. The performer intake and a 600 cfm carb. It was a great improvement. Until yesterday I had a paper 2" high air filter because of clearance. But yesterday I tested a 3" K&N air filter for clearance and the hood closed. The front half of the housing hits the **** carpet on the underside of the hood because there is a little dust from it when I lift the hood back up. But the hood doesn't directly hit the housing.

If you got a good set of free flowing heads & exhaust, the Weiand Team G Street Ram single plane manifold #7525 gives a real kick in the arsh. It fits under stock Vette hoods and has speadbore/squarebore carb mounting flange. I just installed it last week so it is a bit early to form a solid opinion. But so far, it feels like the 2101 Performer it replaced from off-idle to about 2000 rpm. The throttle response is crisper than I thought a single plane would be. The last single plane Vette I drove a few years ago had an old, old Edelbrock Torquer or Streetmaster(?) type single plane and it was noticeabily "spongey" off-idle. This manifold is significantly better off-idle. The Performer cannot match this manifold above 2000 rpm. BIG positive difference in the mid to upper rpm range.
Anyway, I plan on taking it to the dragstrip on Saturday to get a new baseline. I'm hoping for a 2-tenths improvement.

Scott,
Nice car. My favorite year!
What intake do you have now? Why do you want to replace the 750?Normally the 750DP is not mounted on a stock intake is why I ask about the intake..Are you looking for more performance? More information needed.

I have very little low end torque. Even if I hit the gas lightly it always boggs down and sometimes stalls. I think by replacing the carb with a 600-650 and a new intake I will get what I'm looking for. I'm thinking of replacing the cam also. Not sure yet. Of course if I'm replacing the cam should I take the heads to the machine shop. Should I replace the valves ect. And if I'm doing all that, should I just have the entire thing rebuilt. You see where I'm going with this. Not sure how far I want to go with this yet. I've only had the car a month so I'm not doing anything yet.

scottw, I feel so sorry for you. After a little drive this afternoon in my 75, I can't think of hitting the gas and not just sittting me back in my seat. Hell, I do the $20 trick all the time, you know if you can grab it you can have it. Install the XE262 from Comp and the Performer intake and a 650 Speed Demon and get a trill out of the ride.

I'll be glad when I do finally do that, but isn't it nice to punch it at 40 mph and get up to 100-110 mph in no time. :yesnod:

That bogg can be fixed and yes a new cam is probably in order but again, what intake manifold do you have? :) Don't count that 750 DP out yet!

I would try a vacuum secondary 600 or 650 carb first, the 750 sounds like it is too much for the engine. A performer intake would be my choice.

I like the Holley Dual-Plane Street Dominator Intake. Before I installed my crate engine, I had it on my tired L-48, and it made a HUGE difference.
Just my $0.02
