Default How do you keep your steel ramps from slidding away?

On my smooth concrete floor, my ramps just slide away when I try and drive up on them.
How do you guys do it?

You can use rubber pieces on the vertical "front" of the ramp. I use an old piece of garden hose. You could also drill into the floor anf put small bolts in there with hydraulic cement for the front of the ramp to push against.

Mine did this also. I just cut some 2x4s in a length long enough to keep the nose of the car away from the wall. I used the 2x4s as wedges or stops to keep the ramps from moving by placing one end against the wall and the other end against the ramp.
Hope this helps.

Be careful. My neighbor did this when he borrowed my ramps to raise his '80 Formula Firebird Turbo. It tossed the 2" x 4"s out pretty hard. A friend just told me about some ramp extenders that he bought at K-Mart. You drive up on them before you reach the ramp. This gives something for the tires to grip to, instead of pusing the ramps out.

May sound strange, but get some old bath towels, one for each ramp and set the ramp on the towels and the towels extending out enough for the tires to run up over. Holds everything in place.

I would love to hear some more replys to this, as this also drives me nuts!!!!! :smash: How about a solution to the wheels spinning in a front-wheel drive car trying to go up the ramps?? That is equally annoying!! :smash: :smash:

The ramp extenders work great. After many years of experiencing the same problems when using my old and battered "hand me down ramps" I finally purchased a new set and they came with the extenders...no mo' trouble! :seeya Mike

I have the Rhino Ramps and they have rubber inserts on the bottom. They work great!!

Adding a strip of rubber under the metal ramp sounds like a good idea!!

I had the same problem in my garage. I drilled two holes in the concrete about an 1" - 2" deep in line with the center/front of each ramp. When I want to use the ramps, I stick a large cut (square) nail in each hole, butt the front of the ramps to the nails and drive the car up the ramps with no problem. Drill the hole just a hair larger than the nail so its easy to place & remove but stays firm in the hole.

I've tried rubber backed carpeting under the ramps and tires... still slid. So I purchased concrete drop in anchors 1/2inch in diameter. You drill a hole a specific depth, drop the anchor in, and with a supplied tool pound the expanding wedge inside the anchor down into the concrete. The anchor sits flush with the floor and won't be a hazard. They are threaded on the inside, so any size 1/2inch bolt will screw into that well secured anchor. Just unscrew the bolt when your done. You can fabricate any type of "stop" for your ramps. These anchors come in sizes from 1/4 to 3/4 diameter, and 2" to 6" lengths. Just be careful not to drill too deep, past the thickness of your floor. Get em at Grainger ....OK.. I lied...got em from work.
I also had a front wheel drive car that always skidded on the ramps. I gave the ramps a coat of clear epoxy, and generously spread silica sand on the wet coat of epoxy. When dry... it was like sandpaper and grips the tires like crazy.

I have since just given the metal ramps away and bough the Rhino Ramps. They have the rubber feet on them that keep the ramp from moving. They work much better and never slide.

I used two large porch mats, perfect size as my tires are on them just as I start to hit the ramps, and the anti-skid was better than on indoor carpet.

I only use jackstands. Ramps are too dangerous as far as I am concerned.

It only takes a few minutes longer to jack up the front of the car on both sides to set the jackstands in place......

I use a very old, old, old set of heavy steel ramps and they are tall. I have to use a homemade "starter" ramp to get on them otherwise the bottom of the fenders scrape the ramp. On the brighter side, there sure is a lot of room to work under the car with it up higher.

You can drill a hole in the center of the front (lowest) part of the ramp, 1/2" or so, and drill the same size hole in the concrete. Drop a bolt through the ramp and into the concrete. Pull bolts out, store ramps when done.

I bought a pair of Rhino Ramps, but returned them due to their low lift.

I have the ramp extenders with my metal ramps.

I use some heavy duty rubber floor mats. The ones with the big grooves in them to trap water and mud. They do an excellent job of gripping the smooth concrete and didn't run me too much if I remember correctly.

My ramps just take up space in my basement workshop. i haven't used them in YEARS. Anyone want them? Cheap (i.e. free).

I just use a high-lift jack and jackstands.

Or, for small jobs like an oil change, my ramp is a block made from 3 small pieces of 2x6 stacked together so one side forms a stepped ramp. The other side of it is cut at about a 45 degree angle to use as a wheel chock.
