1973 Canadian L-82 Question
A friend of mine is looking at purchasing a 1973 L-82 4spd original owner Corvette. He knows I have a '73 so asked me the following question. This Car was originally imported to Canada, but has a smog pipe on it. My understanding is that was required for California cars only. My feeling is that possibly this car was produced for a California dealer, but ended up going to Canada maybe near the end of the production period. What do you think?

I really wish to be helpful. This is a smog L-82. I love it despite those who will tell me to get the smog crap off the engine;). What info do you need?

What is a smog pipe?
My '73 L-82 has/had an EGR valve and AIR as the emission controls.
The air cleaner has two snokels open into the engine compartment and the air cleaner lid only covers the air filter, not the entire air cleaner housing.
My website has a picture of the engine less the air cleaner and the AIR system. The AIR system looks just like Paul79's.
Also the engine has a code of CLR for a Federal version and a CLS for the California version. This code is stamped on the engine block just in front of the passenger side cylinder head.

My understanding is that was required for California cars only.
Canadian cars got the U.S. Federal Emissions equipment, and ALL L-82s from 1973 through 1980 were built with a smog pump. There was an RPO KD1 that called for Smog Pump delete on some other Chevrolet cars going overseas and possibly to Canada, but this option was not available on the Corvette.

Paul - Thanks for the picture. I think I called this a smog pipe when it should be (I believe) refered to as a smog pump. The question relates to the item attached to the exhaust manifold. I thought this was part of the California emmision thing ..... I could be wrong. Thanks

I think all the 73's had the AIR injection equipment on them (smog pump), I know the big blocks did for sure.
