Newbie Hello and Questions
Hello all. I am new to this forum and to Corvettes as well. I has just had the wonderful privilege of being able to purchase a 1978 Corvette. It is in Ok shape and is drivable. I am looking forward working on the Car and most of all DRIVING it. I have been lurking in this forum for a while, and now that I actually have the car I decided it was time I spoke up and said Hello. So….
Hello.
I have started a web page to chronicle my adventures (That is what they are going to be since I really have no idea what I am doing). You can check it out at
http://www.chrisandtennille.com/vette (Although I won't be hurt if you don't :-))
There are also some pictures available on the site as well. I am interested to see what other people think of the shape of the car.
Now to the Question part of this post.
I have been doing a ton of research on my car and Corvettes in general. I have 2 Questions that I have yet to find concrete answers to.
(Well one is a question and the other is a request for information)
Q1) What is the difference between the 1978 L-48 and the 1978 L-82. I have information telling me that there is a double snorkel intake and a different exhaust, but there has not been any really detailed information on the differences. Any Info would be greatly appreciated.
RFI) Being a beginner, I am wondering what sort of tools, information resources, or any other helpful hints and tips would help be get started in the right direction.
(Just as a note I am planning on compiling all my experiences and putting them up on my site so that in the future people can benefit from the knowledge I had to dig a bit for) :-)
I am hoping to post more of my experiences and also to tap some of the tremendous knowledge that is obvious here in the forum.
Talk to you all later.
Chris.

L82 has more compression/flat top forged pistons 4 bolt main bearings and bigger/more lift and duration camshaft than it's little sister the L48 which has dished cast aluminum pistons and very mild camshaft. L82 about 220 HP, and L48 about 190 HP.
Suggest you get a shop manual and AIM (Assembly Manual) for you 78 Vette. Can purchase manuals from many of the after market catalog dealers.

Welcome ..Sam
You will find that this site is a terrific source of information on vettes in general - take a look at my sig - first of all you will notice that I too own a 78 vette - but if you follow the links to my web site or to the 78 registry you will find answers to your question.
in a nutshell, the l-48 and l-82 differ in the following respects
intake...iron L-48...aluminum L-82
cam...L-82 is more agressive (not saying much)
oh heck - just go here...http://earchitect.50megs.com/corvette/ofpower.html
Yes there is a double snorkle air cleaner.
as well as finned alum valve covers
this site will be one of the best resources you'll have, others you might aquire - an Assembly Instruction Manual (AIM) a good interchange manual - a basic repair manual like a Haynes (I dont like Chilton) and specialty books like those on Rochesters, holleys, engine rebuilding and the like.
Tools can vary widely but a good starter set can be had at a sears or Home depot so long as it includes 1/2" through 3/8" drive rachets and sockets - get a good selection of screwdrivers and open/box end wrenches.
Specialty tools can come later.

Welcome to the Boards!!!! Your cars body and interior look pretty good. Looks like the engine compartment needs some work, but that should be a lot of fun. Sometimes they just need a little more TLC than the previous owner could afford to give. Good luck and don't hesitate to ask questions :D

Re: Newbie Hello and Questions (PyjamaSam)
Chris,
Welcome and congratulations on your new car!
May I suggest-- since your car looks so nice, if you are going to perform "major work that may take some time," you might want to postpone that for more than just one summer of driving pleasure!
In addition to the above mentioned engine differences, the L82 had bigger intake and exhaust ports, bigger valves, forged crankshaft, moly rings, and beefed up pushrods w/guideplates.

Welcome Chris. It sure is a great feeling and exciting time after you buy your first, second, third, etc. Vette. Just take your time and give it some TLC and you will receive great satisfaction as your car returns to the showroom floor look
