Can i convert a HEI to tacho drive?????????
Before i pull two dists apart, are the mainshafts the same apart from the tacho gear?? another words can i bolt all the hei stuff into my cable drive dizzy, so i get to keep my tacho and get hei as well????
has anyone tried this? does it work should i bother? why are we here?

If I understand you right (I'm no expert) but I have been doing research on this (I have an HEI distrib also). The best suggestion I have seen is to get an electronic tach (late70s early 80s) and use the faceplate of your old tach. That way it looks stock but will work with the HEI.

You can get a HEI tach-drive distributor, but they are a lot of $$$. Replacing your mechanical tach with an electric tach from a 75 -77 is much cheaper. I just bought one from Gary Dale at Gruhala Enterprises. I believe he has a couple more. His number is 636-586-3909

ONe of the first projects on my car was to ditch that POS cable drive tach assy, and use one from a 75-7 car....much better install, cleaner, works better more reliable

So let me get this staright. All i have to do is replace the mechaincal tachometer with a 75-76 electric one, and my ditstibutor will hook right up to it? Also will my old 73 face plate fit ontop of this unit.

Yes, your face plate will fit. Be careful removing the needle or you'll break the shaft.

NO the3 faceplate will NOTinterchange from mech to elect tachs....68-77 vintage....the mounting holes holding faceplate to mechanism are differant centers....redrilling was deemed not worth it when I tried it...

I am in the same boat as you with my 74. I have spoken to Lars about it and he tells me that I can set up an ignition using the points which will outperform the HEI and that makes the tach a non-issue.
Talk to Lars about it before doing anything drastic.
