Any good paint for the headers??
I did a good job painting my engine. The only thing without paint is the headers. Is there a good paint that can resist that much heat? Ecklers has a paste for manifolds, has anyone used it on headers? Does it peel off?
Thanks,
Homero.

Go with a good ceramic coating. They will stay a brilliant shiney silver and also help keep underhood tempertures down.

I learned this while FF racing. Paint the headers with Barbque Black paint. Heat the headers with a propane torch so it gets warm between coats. Three seem to do it. Not shiny black but I have had good luck with the paint not flaking off.
I like the jet coating also.

I use VHT "Flameproof" 1500 deg paint. No flaking off. It has dulled a bit, but I can live with that.

Re: Any good paint for the headers?? (de_cat55)
I used Mid Americas Manifold dressing on my headers cause I had the same "what to do" problem then.
This stuff works great on cast iron manifolds and stays on there for a long time with very little care - but not on the headers.
They became rusty and flaky again.
Now I will sandblast them again and get them to the platers.
Those guys will apply a galvanic zinc surface to the headers - I hope this will cure the rust problem.
The galvanic expert told me that if the galv. zinc gets in contact with lots of water and salt it will eventually turn black.
We will see......

Hi, Homero,
I used PlastiKote "Hot Paint" on mine. It's been on there for something like six years and 35,000 miles, no flaking, no burning. I got the paint at a local auto parts place.
I have the tubular stainless steel exhaust manifolds that were stock on the '81. They had some cracks at the welds, so I welded them up and had them bead-blasted to be really clean, then solvent-cleaned them at least 4 times to be sure there was no oil left.
The Hot Paint comes in silver, black, and white, as I recall, in a spray can like regular paint. The trick is, you have to apply the paint, and then bake it on. It's very much like powder coating. If you don't bake it, it will never fully harden and will rub off like powder. My manifolds were small enough to fit in my kitchen oven, so that's how I baked them. You can do the same thing by installing them on the engine and then running it for an hour or so.
Good luck! :seeya

POR 15 makes some great manifold/header paint if you want to go that route.. just put 2 coats on the headers, then fire up the car (with them on) let it run for about 20 minutes and its cured.. no flakes, burns, nothing. great product and only 15 bucks for a quart

Plastikote looks like the answer but my heders are already on, so I don't know about spry paint. Does POR-15 come in colors???? Where do you buy it?
Is flameproof in spry and where do you buy it?
Thanks for all your help...

I know pulling the headers off is a serious pain, but I can't see how you'll ever get a good coating on them any other way. Getting them clean, and then getting a good coat of paint on them without getting paint all over everything else, whether you spray or brush it on, is not something I would bet money on.
