Question for those who replaced carpet
I'm geting ready to replace the carpet in my 82. My console side covers are cracked and want to replace them. Should I just buy them from a vendor, or can I make a replacement? I was thinking about using something like thin fiber board. What do you think or what have you used.
Thanks
Thanks

I haven't replaced carpet yet on my '81, but need to do so, and I noticed that when I had these side panels out to replace my heater core, that they are cracked and kind of broken at the rear thin area, and don't see any reason why you couldn't relpace with fiber board from a home repair store like Home Depot, etc. All you'd have to do is trace and cut out and mark the screw holes.
I have seen replace panels in vendor catalogs, even seen some after market pieces which were made out of plactic, rather than the fiber board, don't know if that would be better/more durable or not. As I recall, the panels are not too expensive, but more than you'd pay to go the 'Home Depot' , make em yourself route.

Never did this, but Masonite would seem like a great replacement. Comes in 1/8' sheets, it's strong, paint and glue stick well to it, and it's easy to cut with any type of saw. It may even be what you already have mentioned...(fiberboard). You can get it at any Home Improvment store.

About to do the same thing in my '81. Got this advice for the carpet from the Vette restoration guy that sold Santa it (Xmas present!!):
Lay the carpet out for a few days before fitting it to remove creases. Fit it on a warm day & make sure the car is warm when you do it.
The console boards in mine are both broken across the thinest part. You can easily make some out of the original hardboard (that's what it's called over here - pegboard in the US?) bought from a hardware store, but chances are that they'll split in the same place at some time in the future. I used some 1/8" Foamex board. I don't know what it's called in the US, but it's the stuff that signwriters use and is a type of hard, lightweight, flexible plastic. Difficult to break but very flexible & very easy to cut (did mine with a knife). Glue & paint stick to it very well (which is probably why signwriters use it!). It's also used a lot for exhibition stands. Hope you can find some as it's ideal for the job.
Paul
p.s. Just to confuse things even more, the GF works in the print industry & they use stuff that they call Foamex, which is completely different  It's a foam like centre sandwiched in between 2 pieces of card/paper. This stuff doesn't work!

Re: Question for those who replaced carpet (82dukman)
I replaced mine with a kind of pressed wooden hardboard, approx. 1/8" thick.
Worked pretty well!
Cost were 3 $$ plus glue plus carpet.

I'd diffinately go with some hard board. A lot cheaper than aftermarket and not difficult to do. I used 3m glue on my carpet replace and it worked great

Re: Question for those who replaced carpet (82dukman)
I redid my carpet some time ago, but last fall I replaced the console side covers on my 79 with carpet from ACC and percut fiberboard pieces from Mid-America. The covers are cheap and it's not worth the trouble of fabricating your own. They fit like like a glove and I had no trouble remounting them? I'd go with the percut ones! :seeya

Re: Question for those who replaced carpet (Intimidator454)
I am building mine out of 1/8" hardboard. I bought the stuff already, and have the new carpet, but this paint job has been holding me up. Ask me how the carpet went in about 4 weeks. :D
