Default Definition of "Built" ?

I've seen this word tossed around quite a bit lately, and I don't really know what it means.

I think there are different contexts, like between a motor, transmission and differential.

With the motor it sounds like maximum performance is close to being achieved? But that is subjective, like comparing a Top Fuel Hemi 499 to a hotrod gasoline-powered 383. Or does it just mean that there are better parts in the engine than it came from the factory with?

Next, onto the transmission, this one I'm pretty sure it means its stronger than stock. But then again...I don't know...the same with differentials?

Thanks for clearing this up. :)

i thought it was the bod of a hot chick :confused:

oh well, haha

ok, seriously, i think its the "ability" of the motor, tranny, and other parts to go fast and to hold up to going fast for an extended period, or a short period as some may notice

All built cars have "A CAM!". I know mine's built because it came with a build sheet.

Really, I think it's like;
"Built": see "3/4 race","noss"

I don't know what it means either.

Good Topic.
I see it as slang for hi performance street as opposed to a blueprinted competion motor.
I'm gonna go "build" me a motor now :D

Built could mean mildly Built to watch out Hot. :cool:

At one time stock cams were reground to hotter than stock. A cam described as 3/4 race may (before my time) have had a meaning in flathead F*rd days which ended in 1955. LOL.

Today many say rv cam for everything- they might as well stamp stupid on their forehead. LOL. If they ask me if it has a cam tell them sure otherwise it would not run. LOL.

Full Race and 3/4 Race were used in the flat head days and their use extended up into the '60's and was applied to OHV engines... It's an arbitrary statement of how radical a cam's grind is. 3/4 race gets a little rumpty-rump and full race will have a lot of RUMPTY-RUMP... It's more of a method of comparison than an actual measurement. If you applied the terms to some "modern" engines, you'd say the "stock" ZZ4 cam was 3/4 race and the ZZ4 with a "Hot Cam" was full race.

I may have not been too clear, 3/4 race came to mean hotter than stock as Mack said. Previously 3/4 race may have been a little more specific.

I would take 3/4 race depending on the user to mean at least "Hot Cam" & full race as it sounds. If he says BBC full race, full house or full tilt ya might not wanna give him a length.

Anybody want to know how a flathead F*rd was hoped up if I can recall from my pre teens (the librarys ran out of good stuff)?

Built one... In a 1953 Ford... About 1967-68... Three Strombergs, Isky cam, a little port and polish, home-built headers, spooks with cut-outs... Had a hard time keeping it tuned, but when it was in tune, it ran pretty good...

Geez, Man, I'm gettin' a hankerin' for a new flathead... Talk about simple... It's just a Briggs & Stratton on steroids. :D :yesnod: :yesnod:

To me it means a modified engine or drivetrain setup that has had some thought put into it and the parts compliment one another for good performance. Engines put together without thought and with mis-matched components would not be considered a "Built" engine in my book. In my younger days, I would bolt-on whatever I could find, was given, or could afford in hopes of seeing improved performance. Sometimes I got lucky, most times not.

Lessons learned: select & buy parts for a set purpose. Have expectations. Avoid buying stuff just because the other guys run it.

My personal definition of "Built" is putting something together that is just plain overkill for it use. I pretty much over do EVERYTHING that I touch so I guess that means everything I do is Built LOL !

I was thinking that 3/4 cam might have come from wanting to express that a cam had 270deg. (adv.) duration. (ie. 270 is 3/4 of a full 360deg. rotation) Just a thought.

And here I thought this was going to be a thread about build dates and such. :) I'd define the day my corvette was "built" as that corresponding to the trim tag. So in Sophia's case, her Birthday is February 18. She'll be 32 this year. :D

Any Flat motor worth a da** was 3/8 x 3/8 and "relieved" as well as ported. Then add finned aluminum "Offy" heads to get the CR back up. With three Strombergs, you'd better cary a fire extinguisher, they usually leaked big time.

Ah, those were the days, my friend! :cheers:
