My starter is about gone, drawing lots of current (I thought only Ford starters were known for that). Do the high torque mini starters last longer than the stock type starters? I only got about a year and a half out of the last starter I got (a rebuilt probably). I suspect that a mini starter probably isn't much more than a new stock type.

Any comments?

there alot of brands of mini starters out there ive used tci tilton hamburger and they work great,some work better for higher compression motors..my 13.1 motor turned over like it was nothing with a tilton mini starter.

I do not know if they last longer but they are worth every penny to cure the problem of heat soak. There is nothing more embarrassing to have a nice drive on a hot Sunday afternoon in July, stop for an ice cream cone and get that errrrrrrr won't start. I recommend the GM offering.


Just as a PS-This starter works on SB, BB and 90 V6s.

Second the GM starter also. It's part number 12361146 and retails for about $228, but you can get it from GM Parts Direct for $158 plus shipping. Your local dealer should be able to give you 25% off list anyway.

I have a Delco mini starter too; the kind used on late model trucks with 454 engine. It works great! Got it new from a forum member who had a bunch of them for his racer--great deal! :D

OK, some votes for the GM one. There are some out there on the internet for much less (around $120), who wrong can I go getting a cheaper, non-GM one. One of them at least says it is from a Japanese manufacturer ( http://www.randys-racemart.com/chevminstar.html ).

Any negative experiences with mini starters?

Put one on my ZZ4 in January '99... I drive it daily, but wouldn't call it a daily driver. I haven't had any problems... Knock Wood.

I put the GM mini starter in mine and it works great. No more heat soak it starts everytime. Got mine new for about 100.

I had a horrible heat soak problem with my Z28 (headers and 10.5:1 CR). I installed a CVR ministarter from JEGS (about $150) and no more problem. Sounds a little different, but cranks right up. The nice thing about the CVR is that the body rotates and is adjustable to 5 different positions which is nice if you're trying to fit with headers. Also, I think the CVR weighed a little less and had more torque than the GM but not sure the exact numbers right now.
