Please check the numbers again and also the numbers on the back of the block. What year motor and is it a 427 or 454?

Allan, are you certain? what is it that tells you that? I'm told it is a 427 but I know well enough to not believe every guy that says he has a 427 for sale. It's not here so I can't check the numbers on the rear, where specifically are they?

I'm showing suffix "IV" as being used to identify a 396 ci, 325 hp big block used in a full size Chevrolet (Impala, etc.) from 1965 through 1968. The VIN stamp of "7F...." shows it was installed in a 1967 car built at the Flint Assembly. What's the casting number of the block? It's located on the rear bellhousing flange and will be a big number like 3902466 or something.

I'll try and get a look at the other number tomorrow and get back to you. If it is a 396 is it worth anything? Is it worth building or would I be better off trying to find a 427 or 454. I need a big block for my 69 originally was a 427. To be honest my knowledge base as far as Chevys go is weak, my background is Mopar but they just don't make a muscle car comparable to the Vette. Anyway what do you recommend I try and find for the vette?
thanks for the help.

Hi
As far as I know, the 396 has the same stroke as the 427, so it is fairly easy to rebuild it to 427 original bore by just replacing the pistons.
Stroke of both blocks is 3.76 ", bore of the 396 is 4.094 and bore of the 427 is 4.25 . May be it is already bored to 427 !
My block in my 68 was a Camaro 396 CI and has been bored to 427 CI.
If the block is cheap , it will not be more expensive to bore to 427 as oversizing a bad original 427 .030 over, I guess.
Your choise.
Good luck, Gunther

It's a 396, '67 variety.
No they are not worth anything unless you have a 28ft Seacraft. :)
Keep moving and find a correctly dated 427. What year is your Vette?

the original 1965 396 corvette block is the only one safe to bore to 4.250. i have tried other 396 blocks and ended up with cracked cly walls. :chevy

Re: Can someone tell me what these numbers on the block mean? (topless68)
My intent is to pull the motor and put a 427 or a crate motor in it. The vette is a 69 so I really would like to find a vette 427. I don't care so much what year vette motor though I would prefer a 69. If all else fails I'll try and find a beefed 454 or a crate motor. I'm a fan of bigger is better, I just like to be as close to correct as possible.
thanks
