Default Any tips for Bloomington Gold SURVIVOR attempt?

Thinking about going for the Survivor award this June. Other than spit and polish (and paying the fee), is there anything special to prep for?

Any tips are appreciated.

Lee, I also "Survivored" my 1980 this past Summer at Bloomington. Key is DO NOT replate, repaint, restore anything. Also, if your '80 has been undercoated by the dealer or someone else at a later time it will FAIL the chassis. This seems to have been common to late Seventies and early Eighties Corvettes. Don't "ArmourAll" everything up either such as hoses(heater and radiator)-it will give it that "phony" look, rather than an "ORIGINAL" look. If you want to spend the $200 to get this Award, you might want to maybe have someone that is experienced in this type of judging "look" at your car. I have taken two of my cars there for this Award and have "coached" some others on having it done to their cars too. I've seen many, many people bring repainted cars, cars with engine compartments redetailed, new carpet, etc. only to "waste" their $200 entry fee and "fail" the judging. Not saying don't do it, it's a nice Award and all, just want to make pretty sure your car can get the Award before you take it there.

You might want to try asking in the "FACTORY CORRECT/RESTO" section

Good luck, and be sure to let us know how you do...

Cec Snyder from the Regina Corvette club had taken his 73 bb down there and had it certified, you may want to give him a shout, he will likely give you some tips. He is a nice guy.
http://www.corvetteforum.net/c4/df/ His is the one with the 454 license plate.

Cec has had that 454 rebuilt twice. Once in 86 and just recently in 2000. The engine was repainted, resealed etc etc back in 86 so it's obviously had it's share of road rash when it was survivor judged in 98. The judges didn't pick up on that, or the LS5 cam....There's things a guy can get away with. I think he;s got close to 200,000 miles on that car now.

Also, Lee forgot to mention the car has to be at least 20yrs old and complete about a 40mi "road tour" with all the other cars going for the Award that Saturday morning of the event. Also, a car can "pass" if it was repainted or engine painted a good while ago. If it has that "just painted last year" look or the interior has that "newness" look for say a 52,000mi car, then they'll "fail" the interior. I had a few problems with the judges when they judged my car. A judge reached under the passenger side kickup behind the right front wheel and brings out grease on his fingers. He then tells me he's "failing" my chassis because it's been "undercoated"!!! What he got on his hand was grease that had come off the ball joints/idler arm that "blew" onto that area of the frame. My car had 91,000mi on it at the time of judging and I have been lubing the chassis every 2,000mi for the last four years. It had 79,000mi on it in '97 when I bought it. To make a long story short, I went to his "boss", had the car rejudged by four different judges and the "original" judge came and "apologized" on how he misjudged my car!!! It can be fun, but hectic too! I doubt I'll ever take a car back there again, though. Twice was enough!!! :yesnod:
