Default Metallic scratching noise from the drivetrain...

Hey guys,

I'm having a hard time figuring out an intermittent sound on my 2006 Z06. At first it happened very rarely but now it's almost constant when you drive on the parkway at a sustained speed over 40 mph, and it's usually worse when the car is hot. It's a LOUD metallic scratching sound coming up from under the shifter/console area, and sounds almost like a bad bearing with no grease. Once the sound begins, it will continue even if u come to a dead stop until it just stops on it's own. Depressing the clutch pedal or revving the engine has no bearing on the noise at all, pardon the pun. The car shifts fine and the transmission feels normal to me. It doesn't seem like it's coming from the rear of the car at all, it just resonates from under the console area with some vibration on the shifter. Someone told me it might be the torque tube? Any ideas?

I plan on taking it in to the dealer ASAP but I just want to have an idea of what to tell them; anything to make it easier to diagnose.

Thanks in advance guys,

Gary

Its your nitrous line rubbing on the torque tube.

I doubt it. It sounds like a bad bearing somewhere in the driveline. The only thing is, it comes and goes. It's at the dealer now getting "disassembled". I should have it back sometime in 2012

Hello, 9-1-1? I'd like to report a fire at the local Chevy dealer!

Default Headers/Exhaust??

Have your replaced your exhaust recently? The heating thus expansion could be causing a shift and then a rubbing against whatever is in the way.

The exhaust is 100% stock. It isn't a rubbing sound, it's more of howling/groaning that predominantly occurs in 5th or 6th gear at highway speed, but then carries over into other gears/speeds once it starts. Again, I doubt it's from the transmission, but I could be wrong. My guess is the torque tube bearings need replacement.

Check the TSBs...might be a known issue.

UPDATE:

I spoke to the Tech who is working on my car and he said the torque tube bearings are the culprit. He is going to replace a few other things as well while it's all apart. I'll let you guys know how it is when I get the car back.

How do you know that? Ever try riding a bike with a bad wheel bearing?

You are missing the analogy here bud

All bearings have the same task, keep something spinning freely without resistance. When the bearing goes bad, it causes friction and drag.
