How hard is it to change rear end gears?
I've have a stock 1978 L48, and I'm assuming I have 3.08 gears, I would really like to put in 3.55 with this new engine that's going in. How hard is it change out the current gears? Can I do it myself, or does it require machine shop pressing, etc.? I've heard from a few people that it's pretty simple, and some have told me it's very involved. What do you guys think. Also, what's a good 2500 rpm stall converter (B&M, etc.) who makes the most for the money?

The actual installation isn't that hard but setting up the pattern on the ring and pinion is, which will almost always requires a very skilled person to do. And your right, a press is needed .

If you aren't familiar with the procedures for setting up gears, your best bet is to find a whole different assy and just bolt it in. A 3:55 one should not be that hard to find.
And if you do, you might try Mark Lefebvre (ML67) in the C-2 forum. He's looking for a complete 3.08 setup. He might help you offest the price some. He's trying to do essentially the same thing, but he's going the other way. 4:11's to 3.08's.
