Default Helments & Drag Racing

Do any of you know where I can purchase a cheap helment to run down the track in? Twice a year we rent a track, and these are the only times I put my Vette on a drag strip. So, I am not wanting to spend alot of money on a helment, but would be nice to have my own, so I won't have to borrow.

To be honest, I wouldn't see why you would want an helmet. Its not like if you had a wild setup. But thats my opinion heh...you can get helmets at bike stores. There are some cheap ones if you ain't looking at full face ones.

I was told it is a safety requirement for the track.

You need a helmet, it's required, unless you just want to watch

Also Motorcycle helmets are different that drag racing helmets, they have more abrasion resistance and less impact resistance and I think less fire restance?

So get a racing helmet!

The helmet has to be Snell 2000 approved. In the past I've always had Bieffe high end helmets made from kevlar fiberglass mix and they are bullet proof. This site doesn't show them.

I don't think you need a helmet unless you are running a 14.0 or better (I hope you are). At least those are the rules for drag racing in Oregon.

I have a bell I paid $400 for. Man, Car helmets are so freaking expensive compared to motorcycle ones.

I would be interested in the same thing!

Around here you must have a proper helmet to run on the dragstrip, even if you are driving a 20 second 4 cyl station wagon. It is a track rule (Is that an NHRA rule?)

I snuck by once using an old bicycle helmet (at Etown).

At Island the tech guy immediately flagged it (gee, he could tell by looking at it!) and I had to rent one. The rental helmets are pretty gross! I put it on over my baseball cap, but it's still creepy to rent a helmet not knowing what kind of scabby, flaky, lice infested head its been on!!! MJ

I believe the NHRA rule is faster than 14.0 you need a helmet.

The track we go to supposedly follows all NHRA rules and that's their limit.

Under 12 you need a rollcage...I think

Summit sells RCI helmets for about $150. Sometimes you can find them on EBAY new.

I guess it all comes down to what you think your heads worth. (J.C. Whitney) I took out my old kevlar Bieffe because it had scratches in it (light road rash) $400+ price and I had a 22 magnum pistol and a 38 special. I shot it 20 or so times from 10-15 feet away and nothing ever went through it. These were 90 degree shots and it would just knock it across the ground and screw up the paint job.

Quality helmets fit nice and feel comfortable.

Are you trying to get ready for the Feb. 17 track day?? What does you car run in the quarter?

They way most tracks rules are in Louisiana is a helmet for convertibles and all vehicles running 14.0 and quicker. The rollcage is for 12's and better. I think solid axles are required for vehicles 10.0 and faster.

NCCC requires a helmet for almost all events. They will have to have a Snell rating of 2000 this year. Which means my old helmet won't tech anymore. That means I'll have one more helmet hanging in the garage that I can't use. :cry I had 2 already. BTW, you can get a helmet from about any scooter shop for $100 to 150 if your just wanting a helmet that will tech.

The NHRA requires helmets and I believe the SCCA does, too. I wear one whenever my wife drives.

Arai and Shoei are about the best brands available. Someone above mentioned Snell and DOT. These are key certifications, which indicate a helmet has successfully passed certain safety tests.

Stay away from cheap, molded plastic or polycarbonate helmets. These can do more harm than good upon impact. They're identifiable by a seam or line running across the middle of a helmet from front to back.

Eric--helmets are pretty standard on tracks--Summit good spot to look--one thing I don't recall being mentioned is the height--I don't know how tall you are, but depending on your height and the profile of the helmet, it might rub the T-Top--and from the look of your car I think your tops are in pretty nice shape--be careful that it does not rub--just a thought.

Yeah Mark, I am getting ready for the 17th! Its going to be a blast! My '70 ran consistent 15 second quarters last year. I borrowed a helmet last year, and the one I got was a SMALL!!!! My ears were folded down like a dog all day!!! I need a Large.

Dave, my car is a convertible...no T-tops for me!
