Default sbc casting # help needed-can't find on Mortec

I'm trying to identify a sbc core that I have. A friend is considering rebuilding it for his truck, but only if it's a 350 (he already has a 305). I found the heads on Mortec.com, the # is 462624 and corresponds to a 75-86 350 (I was told the engine was a 350 from an 85 Suburban when it was given to me). The #'s that I found on the block on the front pad are V1217FMF and under that TFF512822 or TF5512822, I'm not sure on the lower set. I assume that the 12822 is the sequence # for whatever vehicle this engine came from, but I can't identify what the other casting #'s are. Can anybody help???

you need to check the numbers on the back of the block to check with mortec...your checking on the front pad they arent at mortecs site.
example 3970010

Pat is referring to the casting number, cast right into the block. It's on the driver's side rear of the block just below the distributor assuming you are looking over the fender, right near the firewall. They are raised numbers, usually easy to read.

randy72,

the block was cast in V = Flint, MI

the block assembly date is 12 = Dec, 17 = 17th day of mo.

FMF indicates an '85 350ci truck motor, 165hp w/ a 4bbl carb.

Topless68....my code on the stamp pad is V042350. No letters which would be normal. My engine is a correct casting replacement block for a '68 Vette, casting date is March 25/68. Assembly date is April 23, again a Flint engine, from the coding above. However, what stumps me is the lack of a two letter code. It isn't "SO", the 5 is very precise. Any idea what this engine started out in??

Thanks, Doug

Did the engine get replaced under warranty in the car? or did you happen upon the block by happenstance?

Many 'service replacements' are stamped with a "CE"....indicating Chevrolet Engine and were used predominately in the 60's and 70's. Chevrolet stamped the majority of their replacements with CE regardless of engine type. Virtually making it impossible to determine its origin. (I'm almost quoting word for word out of "The Lime Book")

I have seen service replacements stamped with evrything under the sun and very inconsistently. I believe Chevrolet had several vendors making these blocks, thus explaining the discrepancy. Other notes: Many service replacements I have seen (majority) are four bolt mian blocks. ALso, if important to you... the NCRS will recognize a SR block if documentation is presented and a good argument made....

Ken,
I am assuming that these numbers are samped on the stamp pad. To me it looks like some type of date code (Nov 6, 1979). The 800??? My guess would be that this is the rebuilders stamp that a rebuilder used to ID the engine. Is that not a block casting number? (drivers side of the distributor by the bellhousing flange).

Tom73 thanks for the reply Ithink you and I have chatted before on these #s a few weeks back in another forum .Mortec thinks it might be a warranty eng. and the "K" stands for the city in Canada ,but that still doesnt tell me much

Thanks Topless68....my engine was installed in the early 80's. The original was lost "racing" and apparently someone put a later model 350 in it. Prior owner wanted to return it to close to stock so searched for and found a correct date code/casting number replacement block. It had truck heads on it so I assumed it may have started life in a pickup truck? Now it has the right L79 heads and XE262 cam. Would the "50" be a truck code? Or maybe your guess is right, that it was some kind of factory replacement block that started life in something else?
