Install of new speakers and radio in the 80. Warning several 50K pics.
Bit the bullit and deceided to cut the bezal. Hated to do it but I didn't want to install a remote cd unit. Tryed to be very carefull and have a accurate cut.
Din box in fits well with a little filing. Tabs seem to hold it in well.
New radio almost looks like stock. Installed new speakers in front with no hitch.
New larger speakers for rear would not fit no matter what I did using org. speaker covers. So it was off to Home Depot for 1/2 in pressed board. After several measurments and cuts a little touch up with Mr. file, this is what I came up with..Deceided to go with 2 piece for ease of install.
Put a 4 in. stand-off plate on top. Plenty of room for speakers and amp. if needed behind.
Cut holes for speakers and new rug.
A little 3-M spray adhesive and clamps.
Finished and ready for install.
Fits good and solid with presure fit. Also screwed unit to outer most org. speaker mounting bracket to hold solid against back of car.
Need a little blue paint on center bracket screws.
Matches fairly well.
Top view looking down thru window. Cargo cover will still pull over with no problem.
Haven't had her out on the road but sounds good setting in the garage.

I second Mountianshark76
I also have a 76 I have nothing as far as tunes in it. I like the way you put that all together. I assume your T-tops will still fit back there.
Great job
Bob

Thanks guys for the good words. It took a little time to build but it was a day off and nothing to do, plus I hated the thought of spending $200 for the same thing thru Eckler's. To build this cost apx. $30.00 and a little elbow grease. The guys that asked for measurements I'll e-mail them to you.
Another pic of speakers and radio.

82,
Great job and your pictures are also great! I want to put rear speakers in my 81 this spring. Were there speakers there before or did you have to run wires there?

That's a fine job. Looks very nice. Here is my DIN with the factory rear speakers replaced by Pioneer units. This is a cassette unit as I have many dollars invested in tapes. It is upgradable to a remote CD.

You simply did NOT do that yourself, the workbench is too clean and orderly, the install is too slick, and the pictures look too good, must be a foto edit job.....:-))) :D

Here's a few pics of my setup. I also have the DEH-4300. The little remote fits perfectly in the coin tray. It takes about a month to figure out all the settings on it but once you do it's great. I don't keep the 10 in sub in there too much anymore because it looks sloppy just sitting in there. But the sub gives it a much fuller sound. It's a very crisp sub so it's not Thump-thumpy like you get with the 12's or 15's. And if you could shoot me those measurements for the 6x9's I'd really appreciate it.
Here's the head-unit:
Here's my front speakers (Infinity Kappa 4x6 plate speakers):
And here's everything in the back (10in Eclipse Sub and Infinity Ref 6x9's):

Man you guys are making me blush.
To answer some of the ???'s. The T-Tops will fit as per the tape measure. I didn't have to run any more wire there seemed to be enough length. I did use adapting connectors on all the speakers so I wouldn't have to cut the org. wire harness, this gave me a extra 4-6 in. extension. The pics were a lot better but I had to de-tune to 72 dpi to keep the size down. Just me and my Kodac.
I also thought about sticking with tapes or going to cd's. Needless to say I've been burning alot of cd's on the computer lately.
Geez I still have 8-tracks sitting in a box in the garage.

VERY Nice!!! Job well done, you must be proud. I know I would be :yesnod:
I would love the measurements for the speaker plates(dvdme@bcpl.net), looks like the tops should fit like a glove back there. How did you get the proper contour around the wheel well?
Here is my DIN install
With that shop set-up I bet you could make several sets and sell them to a bunch of forum members.
If you build them, we will buy. :yesnod:

Awesome job!
Intimidator, your setup looks similar to mine. Right now it is only a 500w system, but after I get a better amp hooked up, I hope to be pushing 1500w. Here's a few pics. I haven't finished hooking the speakers all up, and for now, I just wired them into the 2 6x9's in the back. I still have room to put my t-tops according to the latest measurements I have done, but haven't actually tried to stick them back there yet. Plus my shade still latches over the rear storage area.
