What suspension do I need to handle a 9 sec 1/4 car?
I need help guys, a customer is installing a 468ci motor in a gutted '79 Vette coupe. The same motor in a heavier Nova run low 10's on motor. The car will be used 75% race and 25% street. He wants to retain the IRS if possible and wants me to beef it up so to speak. What needs to be done? Coil over rear? We need this rear end to hold, if not possible I'll install a narrowed 9in Ford solid axel.
Thanks Guys.

I ain't a specialist when it comes to that but I think you need a solid rear for that kind of speed...its a rule. Coilovers won't solidify your rearend. You do want to change the ujoints for HD ones. Thats pretty much what you can do.

Well, if you ahve to retain the original IRS, your only options is http://www.tomsdifferentials.com. They are the only company I know of that makes heavy duty Corvette IRS parts. I'd look at the 12 bolt convertion and the 30 spline yokes, halfshafts and spindles. However, it still wont be NHRA legal to run that fast.
If you can talk him out of the IRS, a 4-link coil over 9" or Dana 60 is the way to go. Considering the description and the 75% race usage, that would probably be the best option, anc cheaper too.

Hi Thad,
Monty directed you to the right place. Tom's also has an upper control arm setup and half-shaft loops that I'm pretty sure will make it NHRA legal. If you talk to the people at Tom's they will tell you about a couple of 9 sec. Vettes that have IRS.
Good luck with the project.
