Default Alternator Problem

I just installed a new alternator that I ordered from Summit and I ran into little problem.

The alternator is sparking!!!! The sparks are shooting right off the top of the adjusting rod of the brand new March Billet alt Barcket!!!! And the plug was smoking!!!!

Anyone have an Idea of what could cause this??? The only things I can think of are either the alt is going in the wrong direction - or it's bad .... but the alt had a tag on it with the voltage output from thier tests..... so I cant believe the alt is bad.

This is a 100 amp Summit alt (which is the same as the one I took off the car). it is a one wire alternator - which I plugged in the conventional way - could this be the cause? It didnt bother the old one at all????

Help!!!!

at least it looks pretty!

:mad

It sure does "look pretty". Have you got more pics of your engine compartment?

It sounds like it's got some internal problems. Would you consider taking it to the local auto parts store and having them test it? Could something be grounding to the alternator housing?

I would call Summit. They usually stand behind the product. With electrical components there's always the chance that you may have caused the problem - just a head's up......

well I woke up early this morning and tried re-grounding the alt. What a PITA job that was! (my wires are taped all the way around the harness! - looks nice but it makes it a real PITA if you ever need to reroute something) I ended up grounding it directly to the frame. Fire it up and I still had the same problem! :mad

I called Summit, and the tech guy said that it must be a problem with the alt itself, and to send it back. Damn! They were nice enough to say that they would reimburse me for the shipping.

I dropped my old alt back in the car, and she fires right up - with no sparks.

At least it's running again!

I only live about 40mins from Summit. They are a good bunch of people up there. Mike, sounds like you got the alternator I took back a few weeks ago that did the same thing!!!
