Default Heator Core

OK this could be a DUMB question but here it goes.

I am getting a ton of antifreeze leaking out by the fire wall (not close to the motor) passenger side. The inside of the car is dry. but you can smell it for sure

The car does not run hot (yet) but i have not driven it since i found this out

I got the fast guy method. and i am debating on using the Auto zone
40 dollar one or the 110.00 ac delco.. Thoughts... is thier that big of a diffrence in these parts?

I am on the fence about tring the install my self. I had a quote for $180.00 plus parts is that worth it not to mess with this heater core?

Here is a write-up on how to do this. I have not had to do it yet, but I have heard that it is a BEAR.

Mine is leaking too, but I did a temp fix (disconnected the hoses from the heater unit and put two 90 degree plastic repair elbows and a small length of hose in between to elbows to make a 180 turn...kind of a bypass). I will change mine out with the $40 version when my personal swear jar is less full......I'm sure it will be fun!

No matter which one you get, always take it and get it pressure tested before installing it.

Have a close look at the water control valve, just before firewall.
If the core is leaking, you will find coolant in the cabin. There is a foam pad attached to the panel with the courtesy light, it loves to absorb coolant.

I would pay to have it done if its the heater core. $180.00 isnt a bad deal I dont think. I had one replaced on a dakota and if I remember right it was like 250.00 dollars. Thats just my opinion.

If it is in fact the core and you have someone to do it for $180.00 jump on that price fast..Are you sure you read the price correctly and it wasn't $1,800.00???

If you do have to replace the heater core:

1. Stick your arms straight to each side.
2. Run like hell through a door.

It will be much less painful than the heater core.

I agree. No one is going to do it for $180.00 if they have already done one.
Nathan pretty much sums it up!!!

I have used this Guy before and he is pretty straight forward. BUT
it is not the core it looks to the the water control valve and guess what... no one make it. I mean no one. I called Ac Delco, Keen, ecklers, mid america, GM, and did a web search that the CIA would be proud of and nothing!

I found one used for $75.00 but i am not to happy about it. BTW They make one for a 84, they make one for the 89. The 85-88 Nope notta!

You don't need the valve. Later years didn't use it. If you don't use your heater much you could install a manual valve.
