Just installed MGW shifter..thoughts/questions
As my shifter from MGW arrived yesterday I thought I'd spend the Sat afternoon installing it.
This went just ok as fate would have it as I went to install the base fastners I dropped one into the tunnel.I could just see it towards the passenger side but wasn't about to attempt recovery without my trusty telescoping magnet...which of course I couldn't locate. This meant a trip to the NAPA store and I got one there..an hour later and some blind fishing to locate the flat washer which conveniently separated from the screw I was back in business and buttoned it up.
Question tho...this thing is crazy noisy !!! Slow roll off and it whirls like a scraping sound, increasing with engine frequency..then if you get on it even a little it RATTLES like mad. And under constant cruise you can change the degree of sound by how you cuff the stock **** with your hand.
You fellas that have this installed...does it quiet down ? It better or it's in the BIN...all that effort plus I'll have to order a new boot to replace the one I cut !
It does shift VERY VERY nice but not worth the noise.

Ah no..that's not what I wanted to hear... You probably have to order the shifter to get the rubber insulator I cut . and to top it off I was going to wait to install the MGW until after I'd had it in to the dealer as the stock shifter was starting to rattle....gheez. Will George refund ?

No help for the shifter, I use the stock one.
But next time your working near or over a bottomless abyss, if you put a small drop of crazy glue on the washer then put it on the bolt that won't happen again.

Well, the MGW isn't excessive, butthe rattling is a bit much. I read that if you went with one of their *****, the vibration will go away.
I've gotten used to the drivetrain noise as the car already exhibited noise from the factory shifter. I might try one of their *****, but I would rather stay with the stocker.

Not to diss your gear but that's not for me..I really prefer the look of the stock **** and probably the feel of the stocker...I like to ride with my hand on the shifter (except highway cruising) and it doesn't like that ! I also hear the throwout now too...and it gets quieter if you clutch in coasting...but I just came back from another quick jaunt for pizza and it seems to be somewhat quieter now ??

Did you reinstall both rubber boots over the shifter? I cut the top one out with a knife so it would fit. My shifter makes no noise at all with the stock ****. Maybe I got lucky.

My MGW rattles under acceleration when the car is cold. The warmer it gets, the less rattle there is. But then my car did that with the stock shifter, too - from day one - just not as loudly.
A recent thread on this topic was this one:

in which McMung offered a possible solution that I have yet to investigate. Seems odd but ya never know...

I didn't replace the upper rubber slab but I will tomorrow..but it appears much of the noise transfers through the shifter body to the ****....I dunno ??

With the MGW you don't have to cut the boot just stretch it over and bolt down, also put silicone inside the stock **** and push it on. I have some vibration on hard acceleration but quiet otherwise. I wouldn't want to go back to the loose feeling stock shifter. I like the MGW!

A question keeps coming to me... Is this rattling that many of us are reporting occurring in just Z06s? Is it some/all/most Z06s? Is it happening in standard C6s as well? Is it happening on Zs that have the upgraded, "rattle fix" factory shifters?
It's hard to believe that there would be so many positive reports on the thing from both C6 and Z06 owners if a good precentage of MGW users were having this "in your face" problem. Not hear about it on this forum? Are ya kidding? So one can probably assume that this is happening to a relatively small subset of MGW purchasers.
As I said before. my car (2007 Z) had the dreaded shfter rattle stock from the factory. It would go away rather quickly as the car warmed up so I never had the thing upgraded under warranty; it just didn't bother me enough to care. Now the MGW is amplifying the problem both in volume and in duration. But I have no way to say differentiate between the MGW amplifying an existing issue or creating a new one. Too many variables
Somewhere in the archives I believe I remember there being a detailed explanation from some GM insider about exactly what was causing the original "factory" rattle.
